The iPad Is The Mac For The Masses And It Will Keep Selling Well

Editor’s note: This article was reposted from businessinsider.com.

Apple’s iPad is the first "Mac for the masses," and it will sell 21 million units next year, says Apple bull Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray in a note this morning.

His estimate of 21 million iPads for 2011 is up from his previous estimate of 14.5 million. He’s also raising his price target on the stock to $390, up from $371.

Is it possible 21 million is low? After all, Apple sold 1 million per month in the first three months when it was only in the U.S.

The street is calling for between 15 million and 25 million sold next year, says Munster.

Munster calls it a "Mac for the masses," because it is basically the first affordable Mac computer for people that couldn’t buy Macs in the past.

Here’s the three reasons Gene raised his iPad estimates:

ASCI, the American Customer Satisfaction Index conducted a customer satisfaction survey of the personal computer industry recently. Apple once again received the highest score in the survey for the seventh year in a row, and a new high score of 86. Several other companies, including Dell, Acer, and HP, couldn’t come close to matching Apple’s achievement with scoring an average 77 altogether.

iPad Pushes Apple Higher in Customer Satisfaction Survey

According to a CNBC interview with ASCI, the iPad seems to be the device to thank for Apple’s leap from previous years’ scores in the survey.

Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions on iPad Sooner Than Later? As noted last week, Apple is looking to fix the problem of offering print media on its devices. Now they’re making a push to get a new digital “iNewsstand” up and running sooner rather than later, says a report from the Wall Street Journal. But the release of the new media subscription service may be on hold until the next generation iPad becomes available by the end of the 1st quarter in 2011. The standalone application would be similar to Apple’s iBook store.

Apple has been a successful middle man with it’s iTunes Store in offering music, movies, TV shows and books. Now they’re trying their best to offer a similar service with newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Apple has had some past problems in negotiating deals with some media content providers in terms of offering single issues or monthly plans for sale as opposed to full subscriptions.

At present, Apple typically doesn’t sell subscriptions, instead offering monthly iPad editions of Wired magazine for $3.99 each, or a daily edition of Gannett Co.’s USA Today free. Subscriptions, however, are a much more important business for U.S. publishers, representing seven of every 10 newspapers and magazines sold. Publishers also mine subscriber rolls for names, email addresses, credit-card numbers and other information to help them attract advertisers and target new offers to readers.

iPad Eating Into Some MacBook SalesIt looks like notebooks and netbooks aren’t the only devices feeling the pressure from iPad’s popularity. According Shaw Wu from Kaufman Bros., the availability of iPad is better than expected and that some people are opting for Apple’s new device rather than low-end MacBooks.

Wu expects the sale of iPads will trump the Mac. His forecast calls for Apple to sell 5.7 million iPads in the September quarter. This figure is stunningly up from his previous estimate of 3.6 million. Mac sales are to be slightly reduced to 3.8 million from 3.9 as earlier predicted.

Apple Planning Newspaper Subscription Plan For iPadWithin as little as a few months Apple may begin to provide newspaper subscriptions on the iPad through a new digital newsstand service similar to the iBookstore, according to MacRumors.com. Bloomberg is also offering some insight into this highly anticipated subscription service that may turn a corner for magazines and newspapers hoping for a digital revival of their industry:

Apple Inc. is developing a digital newsstand for publishers that would let them sell magazines and newspapers to consumers for use on Apple devices, said two people familiar with the matter.

The newsstand, designed particularly for the iPad, would be similar to Apple’s iBook store for electronic books, said the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are private. The newsstand would be separate from Apple’s App Store, where people can buy some publications now, they said.

The parties involved are still haggling over the particulars such as pricing and revenue sharing, so it’s not a done deal just yet. But Apple is also offering developing tools to support news content and server technology to help newspapers get ready for the new “iNewsstand”.
