Apple Now Allowing Subscriptions for iPad Publications

iPad publishers are now able to sell full subscriptions to their publications within apps, something Apple has rarely allowed in the past. Previously, publishers were limited to selling only single issues of their digital magazine and newspapers. The Daily iPad newspaper does allow for yearly/long term subscriptions, but their free trial period has not expired yet as the app is so new.

But there is concern on how much subscriber information may given to publishers, who want as much as they can get, presumably for better ad targeting and content choices.

From a statement by Apple:

orld of Goo for Apple iPad outsells than Mac, PC, Linux, Wii, Xbox versions

The iPad 2 is (presumably) still months away, and already tech blogs are buzzing about the iPad 3.

According to TechCrunch and Daring Fireball, Apple may be planning to unveil the iPad 3 later this fall. If the rumors are true, the appearance of this next-next-generation tablet would be a surprise, especially as it would come so shortly after the iPad 2, and as Apple usually sticks rigidly to its product development cycles. Given that the original iPad went on sale in April, Apple would be expected to release the second version of the tablet around the same time a year later.

TechCrunch writes,

We’ve now heard that this "fall surprise" is related to this would-be iPad 3. We don’t have any more concrete information beyond that. But, as of right now, the plan is apparently to release one iteration of the iPad in the next few weeks. And then blow the doors open with another new version in the fall.

[…] But Apple has a history of not resting on their laurels. That’s perhaps the key reason why they’ve been so successful in recent years. And that’s exactly why they strike with the iPad 3 in the fall.

Now, I have no details as to what this iPad 3 would include. But one very solid guess is a retina-like display that the iPhone 4 currently has. There’s obviously been many rumors of this for the iPad 2, but it’s not happening yet. But perhaps it could this fall. Another, slightly smaller form factor will clearly be another guess. Steve Jobs has famously played down that idea in the past — but he often does that and turns around with an offering.

Erik Schonfeld with TechCrunch this morning writes that Apple (AAPL) is seeking to finesse the problem of negotiations over subscriptions for periodicals on the iPad by offering publishers a compromise: the pubs can take subscribers to their own Web sites, but they must also offer users the option of buying straight through iTunes.

Schonfeld, citing industry sources, calls it a “brilliant countermove” by Apple, “knowing full well they [subscribers] will choose iTunes.” Schonfeld also points out that the fear among publishers is not just that Apple ends up with all the valuable billing/contact data for subscribers, but also that iTunes will make it easier for folks to cancel their subscriptions.

Well, if it means a subscription option is really, finally on the horizon for the iPad, bully for that, I say.

Apple Files Patent Application for Multiple Position iPad Stand

This is one of those ideas we see fun through the patent office from Apple that looks as if we will probably never see it happen. It’s not that it’s a bad idea, but Apple has a tendency to keep all their designs as free of extra pieces and bits as possible. That said, it’s doubtful we will see a feature like this on the iPad 2. That doesn’t mean it’s not interesting to see some of the ideas cooked up by tech companies.

Still, an iPad with a kickstand similar to what is on the back of the EVO sounds rather interesting. Especially when that kickstand can be moved to any position and locked. That’s what this application seems to be for, according to the abstract and the drawings.

iPad 2: First preview next week as a 'One more thing' during an iOS 4.3 developer event? Will the iPad 2 be presented next week? Our sources from the accessories business told us Apple is planning an event next week where they’re going to showcase the iPad 2 as well.

A release date between 2nd and 9th April seems quite likely, sources – not only ours – pointed to a release in early April. The only question is: When will the iPad 2 be presented? One manufacturer of iPad accessoires now told us Apple is planning on holding an event next week.

They weren’t sure about the circumstances, but were already able to tell us more about their knowledge of the features: The iPad 2 is going to be based on the Apple A5 processor, a completely new processor that is going to to replace the Apple A4 soon. The form factor of the case will change, to a more iPod touch 4G-ish look, comparable to the first mockups we’ve seen already.

Adding to the mounting evidence that Apple plans to add cameras to its next-generation iPad, the company’s digital photography team is hiring a software engineer to create applications for the iPad platform.

In a new job listing posted this week discovered by AppleInsider, Apple revealed that it is looking for someone to fill the position of "iOS Photography Software Engineer." The role, based at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus, will ideally be filled by a "dynamic software engineer with the drive and desire to deliver great photography applications for the Mac and iPad platforms."

The job listing notes that Apple’s digital photography team has delivered applications for the Mac platform in the past, including iPhoto and Aperture. The new position will be related to text rendering and editing, as well as HTML generation, for publishing and viewing photo-based content, presumably on the Web.

Apple seeks an employee with "strong skills with established and emerging web technologies," including HTML5 and CSS. Another "key requirement" for the role is a worker who has a passion for photography.
