As a followup to their iPad is Delicious and What is iPad commercials, Apple introduced a new iPad commercial last night.
The ad features the iPad in a variety of scenes, each captioned with text including “medical, live, musical, work, play, memories, social, magazines, and historic”
Apple has doubled its monthly output capacity of the iPad and is now manufacturing 2 million per month to meet strong consumer demand, but the company reportedly would like to go even further and produce 3 million every month very soon.
Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley indicated that iPad builds recently increased to 2 million per month, up from the previous number of just 1 million a month. Apple allegedly indicated to its suppliers that it would like to produce 3 million a month starting in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010.
It’s likely not coincidental that less than a week ago, iPad shipping times for new orders from apple.com improved to 24 hours. For months, customers had to wait an estimated 7 to 10 days, as Apple was surprised by strong demand for the device when it launched in April.
The new Apple TV will be available later this month (you can pre-order it now) for $99.99. While most of the changes to the device were expected, not everything that was predicted was announced.
For instance, although the new device sports an A4 processor like the iPhone 4 and iPad, it isn’t being classified as an “iOS” device. Presumably at its core, the new Apple TV is running iOS, or at least something very similar to iOS, but the App Store is not coming to the television, at least not directly.
Because content is not stored on the device, instead streamed from a computer or from an Internetservice, Apple has introduced a new rental pricing plan. TV show rentals are just $0.99 for HD and first-run movies are $4.99 for HD. These prices are very competitive, especially in the HD space.
Apple on Wednesday showed off iOS 4.2 for the iPad, including folders, multitasking, support for wireless printing, and streaming of audio, video and photos through the new Air Play feature.
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs showed off the new printing capabilities in iOS 4.2. When printing, tasks will be included in the “Print Center” icon in the multitasking bar, accessed by double tapping the Home button.
Jobs showed off the ability to include multiple icons in folders, as can be done with iOS 4 on the iPhone and iPod touch. He also showed off the multitasking capabilities that will come with the new software.
Jobs also mentioned that Air Tunes has become Air Play, which will allow users to stream audio, video and photos over Wi-Fi.
Shipping delays have quietly shrunk from 5-to-7 business days to 3-to-5 days
The iPad shortages that delayed the launch of the iPad 3G and pushed back the international roll-out by a month have finally started to ease.
In a note to clients issued Wednesday, Susquehanna Financial’s Jeff Fidacaro notes that iPad shipping delays, which had been listed as 7-to-10 business days on Apple.com since early May, have now shrunk to 3-to-5 days.
The Apple iPad has been available 4 months now with sales doing better than most initially thought. Almost 10 million iPads are expected to be sold in 2010 alone, with projected sales in 2011 reaching 18-25 million. It’s no surprise. Well, maybe to all of the naysayers who thought the iPad wouldn’t take off to the degree that it has. But to most others, the iPad’s potential is becoming more obvious as its popularity gains traction.
iPad’s dominance over the tablet computer market in the future seems probable, at least until a viable competitor comes along. We’ve heard frequent droning from other companies about the next “iPad Killer”. The HP Slate hasn’t taken off yet. With an earlier reported release date by the end this year, it looks like the HP Slate won’t be killing anything anytime soon. The Samsung Galaxy tablet is expected to be released before October. There are several other tablets waiting for their turn in the limelight as well. I wish them all good luck, they’re going to need it.
