iPad 2 to Ship by End of February 2011?

Digitimes reports that Foxconn Electronics factories have recently been notified that they will ship Apple’s next generation iPad within the next 100 days with initial shipments to reach 400,000-600,000 units.

The sources pointed out that the iPad 2 will ship as soon as the end of February in 2011. Apple originally planned to start mass production in January, but because the device’s firmware is currently still in testing, Apple has been postponing the schedule. Since Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu are still in pilot production, iPad 2 will be mainly supplied by its Shenzhen plants, while the company’s upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule.

The five new features include "video phone, better mobility, USB port, new display technology and 3-axis gyroscopes."

The gyroscope, video phone (FaceTime) and better mobility (thinner/smaller) have been expected features of the new iPad. Meanwhile, the quote from the paper suggests the new displays will be "Retina Display" technology that will enhance "image and color output". Some interesting Apple iPad patent pictures have been found by Patently Apple showing some new features for the popular tablet. Apple recently put a new face on the iPhone 4 with its FaceTime feature, using a front-facing camera for video conferencing. The new iPad patent shows what looks like a front-facing camera which can be presumed to be evidence of video conferencing capabilities coming to the device sometime soon. Rumors of a camera offered on the iPad with the FaceTime feature included have been swirling around for quite awhile.

7-Inch iPad Design a Done Deal?AppleInsider.com is citing a rumor from a Chinese production plant that Apple has created a new 7-inch iPad, supposedly that is more like the iPhone 4.

From the report:

“Yes there will be a (7-inch) tablet, yes it’s well underway in terms of product development and in fact it’s a finished product,”

“Yes 5 plus different designs have been floating around to help Apple protect itself from people discovering its next product look and feel but… the final design will in fact bear more resemblance to the iPhone 4 stylings than the original iPad design.”

Rumors of the new, smaller “mini” iPad have been floating around for awhile now. The smaller iPad version may be a move by Apple to compete with other ereader type devices such as the Kindle. A lower price than its bigger brother would certainly make it more appealing to consumers.
