Apple on Wednesday launched a new in-app subscription service on its App Store for the iPhone and iPad, alongside a new daily newspaper for the iPad from News Corporation, dubbed The Daily.

A new "In-App Subscriptions" section was added to the iTunes Terms and Conditions to explain how in-app subscriptions auto-renew, how the auto-renewal can be managed and turned off, and stating to users that Apple may request permission to provide personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. The sharing of information can be declined, which will not affect the purchase.

The subscription feature plays a key part in the new tablet-only newspaper from News Corp., called The Daily. The publication was unveiled Wednesday in New York City by the company’s chief executive, Rupert Murdoch, who said the product aims to capture the "serendipity and surprise" that traditional newspapers offer, but in a digital format on the iPad.

Free Same Day Shipping

"New times demand new journalism," Murdoch said. The publication will cost 99 cents per week, and the first two weeks are free courtesy of Verizon. News Corp. spent $30 million to prepare the publication for Wednesday’s launch.

For now, the subscription feature is only available from The Daily, though Apple will make an announcement in the near future about recurring subscriptions for other content providers and application makers.

A live demo of The Daily was conducted, showing off features like 360-degree photographs, interactive content, high definition video, and traditional newspaper staples like horoscopes, weather and crossword puzzles.

Live Coverage of Launch of 'The Daily' for iPadNews Corp. today is holding a media event to launch its tablet-focused news publication, The Daily, which will initially be made available for the iPad. The event is scheduled to kick off at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, or just about 30 minutes from now.

The Daily is offering a live video stream of the introduction on its website, where it has also announced that the application will go live in the App Store at noon Eastern Time, following the event.

Watch at 11 a.m. Eastern Time today as News Corporation unveils The Daily, featuring special guest Eddy Cue, vice president of Internet Services from Apple. Check back later today for our full web site. The Daily will be available on the App Store starting at 12 p.m. EST.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, will be presenting at the event, presumably to discuss Apple’s behind-the-scenes work to develop support for recurring billing to users’ iTunes Store accounts. The Daily has been reported to be priced at $0.99 per week, which would be automatically billed directly to users’ iTunes Store accounts rather than using separate payment methods.

In addition to The Daily‘s video stream, we will be updating this article with coverage as the media event unfolds.

Event Updates

– Those present at the event note that the audience is relatively small, possibly due to weather issues in New York City.
Gizmodo has published purported details on The Daily, confirming many of the rumored details including pricing of $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

– Event underway. News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch on stage. Thanking Steve Jobs for changing industries and developing the iPad. Welcomes Eddy Cue…we’ll hear from him in a few minutes.
– "The iPad demands that we completely re-imagine our craft."
– There is a substantial market of people who do not read traditional newspapers but do consume media and expect it at their fingertips. We’re going to bring the magic of newspapers to The Daily, and we must make the business of news gathering and editing viable again.
– The opportunity is enormous, and in the tablet era, there is room for a fresh and new voice.
– We can offer The Daily for only 14 cents per day, bringing a polished news magazine to our readers. The Daily‘s success will be determined by its utility and originality, and we will work tirelessly toward those goals.
– Congratulations and thank you to our friends at Apple and those involved with putting this project together.
– Introducing The Daily‘s executive team (Jon Miller, Greg Clayman, Jesse Angelo) to show off the publication.

Flash-friendly Skyfire browser for iPad gets updatedAfter the initial iPhone, iPad and iPod touch version earned $1 million in its first weekend on the App Store back in November, the third-party iPad-specific web browser Skyfire for iPad (US$4.99) has been updated to Version 2.1.1 and is available for downloading now. Fixes in the update include auto-completing URLs, stronger privacy controls and several performance improvements.

Because Apple’s iOS devices do not support Flash, the Skyfire browser provides a workaround that transcodes Flash video into HTML5 and thus enables iDevice owners to access most Flash-based websites and videos.

While Skyfire for iPad version 2.1.1 requires, well, an iPad running iOS 3.2 or later, iPhone and iPod touch users can download their own version for $2.99 from the App Store as well.

The New York Times is previewed its News.me iPad news reader app and service on Wednesday. The service will offer a more social network style to presenting the news, and doesn’t have an official launch date yet.

New York Times Unveils News.me Social News Service
The New York Times intros News.me

News.me will cull articles for display based on articles that are being read by the people you follow on Twitter, along with content from bit.ly links. Tapping bit.ly for content isn’t a surprise since the company helping the NYT build the News.me app and service, betaworks, is also the company that runs the bit.ly URL shortener.

TechCrunch has been testing News.me and said the service has a Flipboard feel. Unlike Flipboard, which is working on an ad-based revenue model, News.me will be sold as a subscription service without ads.

The NYT announcement comes only hours ahead of News Corps’ launch event for The Daily — its iPad-exclusive daily news publication. The Daily is expected to cost subscribers US$0.99 a day and will include original content from its own staff of writers.

Murdoch Previewing iPad-Exclusive Newspaper, The Daily, Tonight The world will finally see what the hype is around News Corp.’s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, when it’s unveiled Wednesday morning at a press event at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. But a select will get a preview tonight at an intimate cocktail party at CEO Rupert Murdoch’s apartment.

Everyone else will have to wait until tomorrow to see the product that Apple and News Corp are said to have developed together. But there’s a lot of buzz floating around the Web about what the publication will actually look like.

The Daily is a new frontier for News Corp. The media empire historically purchases a publication and goes in and restructures, as it did with The Wall Street Journal. By contrast, Murdoch starts from scratch with The Daily. He’s nabbed respected journalists from publications like Forbes and the New Yorker to create original content spanning a broad base of topics including news, arts, sports, entertainment, and opinion.

For all the talk that The Daily is cutting edge, it walks a thin line between something that is both modern and old-fashioned, All Things D’s Peter Kafka said. News Corp. owns All Things D, but Kafka said he hasn’t gotten an invitation to Murdoch’s preview and doesn’t expect to receive one.

The Daily will have a lot of the bells and whistles that are now generally associated with publications on the iPad, such as audio and video. It’s also been reported that it would include 3D video, but Kafka said it’s not there yet.

Although The Daily has a Web site, the focus is most definitely on the app. The site will have just a small sampling of content included in the app, but probably less than 10 percent.

Theoretically, The Daily will probably feel pretty similar to a traditional newspaper. It will have six sections of original content delivered once daily. It will even have a crossword. With the iPad-friendly features that a lot of users have come to expect, there isn’t much that would separate The Daily from consumer magazines on the iPad, except that it’s delivered each day rather than each month.

Ancestry.com‘s iPhone app—which lets you carry your family tree around in your pocket—has been updated with new features that include iPad optimization.

Ancestry.com updates app with iPad optimizationThe idea is that the iPad app contains a bunch of companion content — polls, trivia, character bios, video, photos, etc. — that is delivered at specific times in an episode using special syncing technology from Nielsen.

The company’s newly universal app, Ancestry 2.0, debuted Monday. In addition to its revamping for the iPad, the app features a new interactive family tree viewer to help users visualize family relationships, as well as the ability to view supporting historical documents.

The app does require an Ancestry.com account to work. The site offers a 14-day free trial, but memberships can cost $89 for six months of access to the site. The fees pay for access to more than century’s worth of Census, immigration, Social Security, and military records data that help users piece together the puzzles of their family history.

The Ancestry app itself is free and compatible with any device running iOS 3.1 or later.
