iPad and Apple

With the iPad crossing the 2 million sales threshold this week, one prominent analyst now believes Apple will sell 6.2 million devices in calendar year 2010, as many of the company’s international stores have limited stock.

Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray issued a note to investors Tuesday, in which he upped his 2010 sales estimates from 4.3 million, citing strong early sales. 6.2 million in 2010 would add another 25 cents to his calendar year 2010 GAAP earnings per share estimates.

However, given ongoing low supplies of the iPad, Munster also cautioned investors that sales could be limited by availability. The analyst said he believes initial international sales over the weekend contributed at least another 100,000 units.

"We conducted 25 checks at Apple stores in the U.K., Germany, France, Japan and Australia, and found that supply exists after the first weekend of sales, but availability is very limited," he wrote.

Among the 14 international sales that were contacted on last Friday’s launch day, 29 percent had sold out. Following the launch weekend, another 11 stores were contacted, and 36 percent were entirely sold out. Similar checks among U.S. Apple stores on May 21 found that 74 percent of stores were completely sold out.

Vijay Rakesh, an analyst with Sterne, Agee & Leach, said Tuesday that Apple is currently manufacturing between 1 and 1.5 million iPads per month, and that the company could double that production in the September quarter to meet demand, if needed. He based his numbers on checks with memory-chip manufacturers overseas.

“We believe most of the manufacturing bottlenecks are now solved in the iPad supply chain even though memory continues to be a constraint,” the analyst said, according to the Associated Press.

Apple retail stores overseas will open early on Friday, with the international launch of the iPad set to start when doors open at 8 a.m. local time across the globe.

Apple’s regional websites for stores in the U.K, France, Canada, Germany, Australia, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland all indicate that they will open at 8 a.m. this Friday, May 28, for the international launch of the iPad. The device is also set to on sale in Spain, where Apple does not have any retail stores.

A retail purchase is likely the best option for customers who did not buy an iPad when preorders were first made available earlier this month. Since May 12, all new iPad preorders are not scheduled to ship until June.

The iPad will launch in a total of nine countries on May 28, with nine additional locations — Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore — receiving their iPads in July. Apple has said it will announce dates for nine additional countries at a later date.

Checks with 50 Apple retail stores found that the iPad 3G remains completely sold out in the U.S. weeks after its release and 7 days ahead of the device’s international launch.

Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray said his team contacted representatives at 50 Apple retail stores and found that 74 percent of them were sold out of all models of the iPad, with the Wi-Fi model available in 26 percent of stores, and the 3G version sold out. It’s been the same story for Apple since the iPad 3G first launched on April 30 in the U.S.

To deal with the limited supply, Apple’s stores have begun offering customers the opportunity to be placed on a “Notify Me” waiting list, which will have the store hold an iPad when it arrives for 24 hours. One Apple store representative told Munster that customers who enlist in the in-store reservation system typically wait 4 to 7 days to receive an iPad. That’s better than the 7 to 10 day wait found via Apple’s online store.

A pair of new surveys from ChangeWave show that demand for the iPad has grown since the device hit the market in early April, while 91 percent of those who already bought one are satisfied with their purchase.

The results of the two surveys conducted in May were revealed Thursday by ChangeWave. One polled 3,174 consumers to measure future demand for the iPad, while a second survey of 153 new iPad owners set out to discover their impressions of the device.

In the larger study of general consumers, 7 percent of respondents said they are "very likely" to buy an iPad, while another 13 percent said they are "somewhat likely." That’s the highest level of consumer interest ChangeWave has seen in the iPad to date.

In February, a previous survey from the same company found that 4 percent of respondents were "very likely" to buy, and 9 percent said they were "somewhat likely." While those numbers were lower than the current totals, they were also higher than the pre-release demand for the iPhone based on a 2007 survey.

Among those polled in ChangeWave’s May survey, 245 identified themselves as currently owning an e-reader. Among those, 62 percent currently have an Amazon Kindle, versus 16 percent for the iPad — just weeks after the hardware’s release.

A major change from the February survey came in the form of content read on e-readers. The introduction of the iPad resulted in spikes of newspaper, magazine and blog reading on portable e-readers. Both online newspaper and magazine reading were up 7 percent, while blogs increased 1 percent.

Analyst Raises 2010 iPad Sales Estimate to 8 MillionIn a research note released today, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky increased his estimate of 2010 iPad sales from 5 million to 8 million, citing upcoming international launches and continued strong sales in the U.S. as evidenced by retail store shortages. For the current quarter, which runs through late June, Abramsky is predicting iPad sales in excess of 1.8 million units in the United States and an additional 600,000 in the nine new countries receiving the device on May 28th, pushing quarterly sales to 2.5 million, up from earlier estimates of 1.5 million.

Continued strong iPad sales in the U.S. are estimated in excess of 200,000 per week, nearly double that of current Mac unit sales.

Checks indicate that US iPad sales remain strong post-launch, driven by rising consumer visibility to iPad’s user experience, sustained PR/word-of-mouth marketing, 3G iPad launch, and broadening iPad apps/content. We believe Apple is now selling >200k iPads/wk, greater than US Macs (est. 110k Macs/wk) and just below US iPhone 3GS first qtr (246k/wk).
