iPad and Apple

AppleInsider has discovered that Apple’s iPad management profile policies available to corporate users include the capability to disable use of its camera, providing evidence of future intent to include a camera on upcoming models.

Apple’s configuration profile tools for iOS devices include a variety of settings and restrictions that companies can impose to regulate how the devices are used and to configure services such as VPN and wireless networking access or email, calendar and directory services.

Policies can also force strong passwords and set security features such as the number of times a password attempt can fail before the device wipes its data. Similar to parental controls, the policy settings can also be used to block access to features such as the iTunes Store, Safari, YouTube, or the use of its camera.

Stockbriefings.com is reporting that Walmart Senior VP Gary Severson anticipates the giant retailer to be selling the iPad by year’s end. Considering there’s probably a Walmart within a 5 mile square radius of every American, that would mean a wider audience of potential iPad owners and users. Not wanting to be late to the game of selling savvy tech devices, Walmart is trying to compete with other tech retailers like Best Buy.

On Friday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) stocks closed at 49.43.

Predicting sales of a new product based on demand from eager early adopters can be risky. However, one analyst made such a leap. Bernstein Research analyst Tom Sacconaghi told investors Thursday Apple could sell 25 million iPads in 2011. But, then again, it might sell 18 million tablets next year. It kind of depends, you know?

“An analysis based on extrapolating sales trajectories of [the iPhone, iPod and all netbooks] suggests that Apple could sell a staggering 25 million iPads or more in fiscal 2011,” the analyst wrote. This seems to go along with Apple reporting selling three million iPads in the first 80 days.

Apple: Another Round Of Estimate Hikes On Strong iPad SalesApple (AAPL) shares are trading higher today on another round of Street estimate hikes, as evidence of strong demand for the iPad continues to pile up.

* Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall repeats his Buy rating, while lifting his price target to $370, from $355. His EPS forecast for the September 2010 fiscal year goes to $16, from $15.75; for FY 2011, he now sees $18.50, up from $17.75. On the other hand, he trims his June quarter estimate to $3.24, from $3.50, to reflect a projected push out of some iPhone units into the September quarter from the June quarter, due largely to supply constraints. He now sees June quarter iPhone units at 7.75 million, down from 8.75 million. “Apple,” he writes, “remains the best technology company on the planet.”

* CLSA Asia Pacific Markets analyst Steve Fox likewise repeats his Buy rating on the shares, lifting his target to $335, from $320. He also raises EPS estimates, to reflect “continued momentum in iPad sales.” His FY 2010 EPS estimate goes to $13.85, from $13.65; for FY 2011 he now sees $17.60, up from $17. He expects iPad sales in the June quarter of 3.4 million units. He also says that checks find LCD panel and touchscreen sensor capacity and yields “are more favorable for iPad supply than we heard just a few weeks ago.” He thinks Hon Hai is poised to ship 18 million iPads in the first 12 months of production.

Apple Ramps July iPad Production to Over 2 Million UnitsAccording to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple has pushed orders with its suppliers for iPad production well beyond two million units for the month of July, marking a continued increase in supplies as the company seeks to keep up with demand in existing markets as well as expand into new countries.

Apple is estimated to have outsourced 2.3-2.35 million iPads to Taiwan players in July with 58-60% for the Wi-Fi and 3G hybrid model despite Wi-Fi only models having stronger sales in the first half of 2010, Kuo noted.

More people are browsing the Web via an iPad than on an Android-powered device, according to new monthly browser usage data from one analytics firm.

In just three months on the market, Apple’s iPad has come to represent 0.17 percent of all Web browser traffic tracked by Net Applications. The iPad’s June total managed to exceed Android, which represented 0.14 percent of all Web browsing traffic.

Behind both of them was another iOS-powered device from Apple, the iPod touch. In June, the iPod touch took 0.12 percent of the Web browser share, according to Net Applications.

The iPad has seen a steady climb since it was released in April, notching 0.03 percent in the first month, when it was only available in the U.S. In May, the numbers tripled to 0.09 percent, only to nearly double again in June to the 0.17 percent figure that pushed it past Android.

The numbers, however, do not mean that there are more iPads on the market than Android devices. But the stats do indicate that a far higher percentage of iPad owners use their new device to browse the Web — so many, in fact, that it has now surpassed Android in that department.
