Perhaps with little surprise, Apple’s iPad was rooted over the weekend as evidenced by the usual flurry of videos, photos and other various sources. Gaining access to root provides iPhone hackers full control of the device’s operating system which in turn will lead to the creation of tools that will automate the process for the rest of us.
Alongside the iPad launch on Saturday was the launch of a several thousand new iPad apps with many more coming. Developer interest in the iPad has been strong, and it will be interesting to see the direction of the apps over time. We can’t cover them all, but here are a collection of useful and/or interesting ones that we’ve run across (with videos):
Apple on Monday announced that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the U.S. on its first day of availability, including preorders shipped directly to customers, and purchases at Apple retail stores and Best Buy outlets.
"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world — it’s going to be a game changer," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."
Apple also revealed that more than a million applications were downloaded from the App Store for the iPad. Apple’s iBookstore saw over 250,000 books downloaded on the first day alone.
The first-day sales are lower than what some analysts had projected. Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray increased his forecast to between 600,000 and 700,000 after noting healthy supply after surveying a number of Apple retail stores.
It’s been a little over 2½ years since I last looked at the performance of Apple’s mobile devices. A lot has changed with the software and hardware since then, let’s take a look at how the new iPad compares to the devices we’re more familiar with.

This first benchmark compares the native performance of the iPad against the iPhone 3GS. The version of the iPhone OS is the one originally released with both devices (3.2 and 3.0, respectively.) The application used to test the devices was a release (optimized) build for ARM v7.
On average, the iPad is about twice as fast as the iPhone 3GS when executing native (Cocoa Touch) applications. Great news for developers, because it gives us much more flexibility when creating our apps.
Jacksonville’s Best Buy was the only store in the area selling the Apple iPad on its debut day Saturday, and people were lined up waiting for the store to open.
“The first in line arrived around 3:30 (a.m.),” said Ryan Coplen, the store’s general manager.
By the store’s 10 a.m. opening more than 20 people were lined up to take a look at Apple’s new creation.
But those planning to purchase were disappointed when they found out there was a shipment hitch.
