No, it’s not a hardware device, but Camera for iPad (US$0.99) can help out those frantic iPad users who are wondering how the heck they’re going to survive without a by-God camera built into their latest Apple toy.

The app is universal and runs on both iPad and iPhone. In fact, the camera in the iPhone is what ends up being the real “Camera for iPad.” Installing the app on your iPhone and iPad allows the two devices to find each other via Bluetooth. When they’re linked, everything that the iPhone camera is seeing is transmitted to a window on the iPad. Press a button on the iPad, the iPhone snaps the photo, and then the photo is transferred — slowly — to the iPad.

The idea is pretty cool, and it does provide a way to get photos into your iPad until that Apple Camera Connection Kit actually hits the stores. The slowness I’m talking about in the previous paragraph is not a fault of the app, but the fact that Bluetooth is being used for the file transfers. It doesn’t have anywhere near the speed of Wi-Fi, but you will be able to shoot and transfer photos anywhere; there’s no need for the two devices to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

The teardown experts at iFixit have been busy with the iPad over the past few days, beginning with an analysis of internal photos of the device posted to the FCC’s website last Friday and continuing with a teardown of the actual device on Saturday.

Late yesterday, the company announced that it had partnered with chip reverse engineering firm Chipworks to open up the iPad’s A4 chip, the custom Apple solution that serves as the brains of the device. The project involved both x-ray imaging of the iPad’s components and physical cross-sectioning of the A4 chip.

It’s pretty clear that new iPad owners are hitting the app store in droves. Books, games and movies are all flying off the virtual shelves. Since you may be suffering from sensory overload, or just looking for some ideas, here are some things I’ve seen that might be worth a look.

I tried Time Magazine (U.S. $4.99) and Popular Science ($4.99) magazines on the iPad. The both look striking on the luscious iPad screen, but neither one really excited me enough to get me to subscribe. Time had nice use of video. Pop Sci looked stunning, but didn’t have a lot of text. I think both magazines will need to come down below 5 bucks an issue to attract readers.

Apple to introduce iPhone OS 4.0 on April 8Apple on Monday announced that it will formally introduce the next version of its mobile operating system, iPhone OS 4.0, at a special event scheduled for this week, April 8.

Apple sent out invitations on Monday for the event, scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific, offering a "sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone software," according to Engadget. The event will be held at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus.

Apple is expected to release iPhone OS 4.0, along with a new version of its iPhone, this summer at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

In March AppleInsider reported that Apple plans to add full multitasking support in the forthcoming release of the 4.0 software update. Sources said that the company has developed a "full-on solution" to allow multitasking of third-party applications on the App Store.
