How has week #1 with the iPad been? Pretty good actually. I wasn’t going to get one, but while on a TUAW assignment to get some photos… and kinda sorta held up my hand and did the deed.
I’m glad I did. It’s now a constant companion. I actually prefer surfing the web with it over my laptop because it is small, weighs less, and is quite speedy. I haven’t seen any of the wireless issues some are reporting. Mail is good, but I can’t wait for that unified inbox coming this fall.
I had some need to control a PC, so I looked around for some kind of remote client for the iPad. There were plenty of them the iPhone, but I wanted full resolution. I wound up with RDM+, which is a US$9.99 app that lets me connect to my Macs or PC without any firewall fooling around. Screen updates were fast enough, and installation had no hiccups. I’m sure there are some other solutions, but RDM+ worked very well. I took my iPad to a restaurant and I connected to my PC with a click.
Battery life has been amazing. I use the iPad pretty heavily, and can easily get through 2 days or more without a re-charge. The screen is excellent for displaying still images and video.
Negatives? A few. Mail seems slow to come in. My MobileMe mail will ping my desktop and my iPhone at the same time. Then a minute or so later it will show up on the iPad. Don’t know why this is happening, but it is pretty consistent and it should be fixed. I also don’t like the 15 minute wait before the iPad polls a POP account. I’d like it to offer 5 minute and 1 minute options just like Mail on OS X.

X-Plane for iPad combines many of the features of the X-Plane series of iPhone apps into a single application; the iPad version includes all 9 regions and 13 aircraft from the existing iPhone applications with 12 more regions and 27 more aircraft listed as “Coming Soon.” Users can choose to fly a wide range of different aircraft types including a Cessna 172, Boeing 747, F-22, ASK21 glider, Blackhawk Helicopter or even a Space Shuttle.
