Jeppesen offers iPad chart appJeppesen now offers an application, Jeppesen Mobile TC, that allows pilots to search and view terminal charts on the popular Apple iPad touch-screen tablet computer. It is available from the Apple iPad App Store.

Non-Jeppesen charting subscribers will be directed to JeppDirect website to purchase the electronic chart subscription.

Jeppesen research and design experts determined that the 9.7-inch, LED-backlit iPad screen is ideal to view, search, and update Jeppesen terminal charts. JeppView electronic navigation charting service subscription customers will have access to Jeppesen terminal charts through the iPad application at no additional charge.

“Our new iPad application is designed for a very specific purpose, namely for searching and viewing terminal charts. However, the cross-market appeal of this technology will lead to further development of Jeppesen services available for the iPad in the near future, as customers provide the specifics required to serve their mobile computing needs,” said Tim Huegel, director of portfolio management at Jeppesen Aviation.

Not intended for navigational use, the Jeppesen Mobile TC application provides pilots with another tool for advancing toward a paperless operating environment. Jeppesen will address iPad applications for other aviation markets in the near future. Additional Jeppesen data services for iPad in the airline market, including tailored electronic charting and crew planning solutions, are being evaluated.

The Apple iPad has been available 4 months now with sales doing better than most initially thought. Almost 10 million iPads are expected to be sold in 2010 alone, with projected sales in 2011 reaching 18-25 million. It’s no surprise. Well, maybe to all of the naysayers who thought the iPad wouldn’t take off to the degree that it has. But to most others, the iPad’s potential is becoming more obvious as its popularity gains traction.

iPad’s dominance over the tablet computer market in the future seems probable, at least until a viable competitor comes along. We’ve heard frequent droning from other companies about the next “iPad Killer”. The HP Slate hasn’t taken off yet. With an earlier reported release date by the end this year, it looks like the HP Slate won’t be killing anything anytime soon. The Samsung Galaxy tablet is expected to be released before October. There are several other tablets waiting for their turn in the limelight as well. I wish them all good luck, they’re going to need it.

AppleInsider has discovered that Apple’s iPad management profile policies available to corporate users include the capability to disable use of its camera, providing evidence of future intent to include a camera on upcoming models.

Apple’s configuration profile tools for iOS devices include a variety of settings and restrictions that companies can impose to regulate how the devices are used and to configure services such as VPN and wireless networking access or email, calendar and directory services.

Policies can also force strong passwords and set security features such as the number of times a password attempt can fail before the device wipes its data. Similar to parental controls, the policy settings can also be used to block access to features such as the iTunes Store, Safari, YouTube, or the use of its camera.

The School of Medicine at Stanford University has adopted Apple’s iPad, providing the device to all incoming first year medical students and Master of Medicine students.

The school cited four reasons behind the new program, including student readiness, noting that iPad “creates opportunities for efficient, mobile, and innovative learning.”

Stanford also noted “the flexibility of iPad technology,” noting that “iPad allows students to view and annotate course content electronically, facilitating advance preparation as well as in-class note-taking in a highly portable, sharable and searchable format.”

Access to information and “information literacy” was also a consideration, with the school pointing out that “students will be able to easily access high-quality information at any place, at any time (for example, images from textbooks on digital course reserve, image databases, journal articles, Lane Library’s various search tools, etc.)”

A fourth rationale was Stanford’s intent to go green, “replacing printed syllabi with PDFs is in line with the Sustainable Stanford initiative, which aims to build sustainable practices into every aspect of campus life.”

Victorian doctors and nurses could be equipped with iPads while undertaking their hospital rounds in future, if a trial of wireless technology is successful.

From January next year, 500 graduate doctors, nurses and advanced practice nurses would be given iPads to use when treating patients in hospital, Health Minister Daniel Andrews said.

The iPads would connect to safe wireless networks within the hospitals, without interrupting sensitive electronic equipment.

Mr Andrews said with the burgeoning use of and reliance on technology and technological aids in health, it made sense that health services would be influenced by access to new technology.
