Following today’s announcement that the iPhone will finally be made available in a CDMA version for use on Verizon’s network, Bloomberg reports that a version of the iPad directly compatible with its network is set to follow suit.

Verizon Wireless will sell a version of Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet computer that can connect directly to its network, posing another challenge to AT&T Inc. as the carrier’s exclusive hold on the iPhone draws to a close.

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon’s network. Shammo declined to say when the change may happen.

The most recent rumors of a CDMA iPad surfaced in late December, claiming that the next-generation iPad will come in three versions: Wi-Fi, UMTS (GSM) 3G and CDMA 3G.

ThinkGeek's iCade gaming cabinet for iPad moves closer to realitySince 2001, ThinkGeek has been compiling gag products for April Fool’s Day. Some products are silly, some outrageous, and some are conceptually cool and show promise as a real product. The iCade gaming cabinet, one star of April Fool’s 2010, falls into this latter category. The iCade is a retro gaming cabinet that hearkens back to the 80s and its arcade gaming craze. The table-top unit lets you mount your iPad as the display, while the cabinet itself includes a joystick, arcade buttons and Bluetooth to connect to your iPad.

After a few copycat versions hit the scene, ThinkGeek realized there is genuine interest in such a product and is working with Atari and ION to bring this concept to fruition. Atari is planning to release iCade-friendly versions of its classic arcade games, like Asteroids. These games will run on the iPad, and the action will be controlled by the BT-connected joystick and gaming buttons. An API will also be released so that current game developers can create iCade-compatible versions of their games.

'The Daily' iPad News Publication to Debut January 19th

Last month, All Things Digital reported that News Corp.’s forthcoming tablet-focused news publication, The Daily, appeared likely to debut sometime the week of January 17th. Forbes has now confirmed with a source inside the company that the publication will be formally announced on January 19th.

Mark your calendars, media nerds. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 is the day it all changes. Maybe.

That’s the planned launch date for The Daily, the iPad-only publication News Corp. has been feverishly developing. The company has yet to say boo about it, and a spokesman declined to comment when I asked him about the launch date, which comes via a News Corp. insider.

iPad now available on Best Buy's online storei-hotake for iPad is an unusual iPad case/holder, designed to help you carry your iPad when you’re on the go. Unlike your traditional iPad case, the i-hotake does more than protect your favorite gadget, as it also includes large handles built to make your iPad a lot easier to grab/carry.

Built from heavy duty plastic, the i-hotake is easy to install: simply disassemble the case, snap it on the back of your iPad, and your device will be instantly wrapped. The case is fairly thick, and is designed to protect the iPad from unintentional drops.

The case’s handles make your iPad a lot easier to grab, and are especially welcomed while traveling, as they help keep your iPad in place (car passenger, while on a plane…). On the other hand, the handles also make the iPad thicker, a “feature” that may not work for every iPad owner out there.

iPad 2 to Ship by End of February 2011?

Digitimes reports that Foxconn Electronics factories have recently been notified that they will ship Apple’s next generation iPad within the next 100 days with initial shipments to reach 400,000-600,000 units.

The sources pointed out that the iPad 2 will ship as soon as the end of February in 2011. Apple originally planned to start mass production in January, but because the device’s firmware is currently still in testing, Apple has been postponing the schedule. Since Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu are still in pilot production, iPad 2 will be mainly supplied by its Shenzhen plants, while the company’s upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule.
