iPad owners should have access to all of the web videos available on CBS.com by the start of the fall TV season, says Anthony Soohoo, the senior VP of CBS Interactive. While the iPad can already view some clips and episodes from the site using HTML5, access is otherwise unequal, with clips coming only gradually. This severely limits the practicality of an iPad for watching CBS shows.

Analyst Suggests AT&T May Have Gained iPhone Exclusivity Through 2010 With iPad Data DealComputerworld reports on comments from Broadpoint AmTech research analyst Brian Marshall suggesting that AT&T may have gained an extra six months of iPhone exclusivity in the United States with its bid to provide data service for the iPad, extending its window through the end of 2010.

"AT&T had to do something dramatic to get the iPad," said Brian Marshall, a Wall Street analyst at BroadPoint AmTech. AT&T’s move was to discount their normal wireless data plans by 50% to iPad customers.

As part of the tit-for-tat, AT&T got what it wanted. "For that pricing [on the iPad], AT&T was able to negotiate a six-month extension on the iPhone exclusive," Marshall said.

Marshall provides little evidence for his claim beyond the observation that Verizon failed to win the rights for iPad service. Numerous sources had indicated to Marshall that Verizon was a "certainty" for the iPad, suggesting that some major happened to push Apple’s focus to AT&T.

AT&T’s exclusivity window for the iPhone in the United States has been the subject of some debate, with early claims pegging it at five years being disputed by other reports that AT&T initially had a two-year agreement that extended through mid-2009 but gained an extra year when it increased the handset subsidies paid to Apple. A report from early last year suggested that AT&T was searching for a way to extend its exclusivity for yet another year until mid-2011, and its iPad data pricing offer may have been a means to get halfway to that goal.

Apple's iPad launch helps April retail electronics sales grow 9.7%Though overall retail sales in April were a mixed bag, consumer purchases of electronics grew 9.7 percent year-over-year, thanks in large part to the successful debut of Apple’s iPad.

iWork for iPad Review RoundupIf you use your iPad for work, there’s a good chance you’re interested in using Keynote, Pages or Numbers, too. The Mac Observer took the time to check out all three so you’ll know what to expect before spending your hard earned cash.

Keynote The Keynote app for the iPad is a necessary addition to the suite of apps for most users. Even if one is not often preparing formal presentations, it’s a great way to collect and manage information from the photo library — or view already created content in, say, PowerPoint (.PPT, .PPTX, .PPS, .PPSX) It doesn’t have the power of its big brother on the Mac, but it doesn’t need to. It is supremely sufficient. Full review.

Pages Apple’s iPad is a great device for watching movies and TV shows, listening to music and playing games; and thanks to apps like Pages, it works great as a content creation device, too. Pages for the iPad is a slimmed down version of Apple’s word processor and page layout application, and it works surprisingly well for on-the-go document creation and editing. Full review.

Apple iPads are flying off the shelves faster than the company can manufacture them. Among the early adopters is one enterprising broadcaster that has discovered an immediate and practical application.

Last week, news anchors and producers at Barrington Broadcasting Group’s WFXL Albany, Ga., replaced their paper scripts with electronic versions displayed on the iPad.

“By using the iPad, we’re saving hundreds of thousands of sheets of paper annually,” says News Director Terry Graham, who also anchors the news at 6:30 and 10 p.m. at the Fox affiliate. “Our projected savings per month are $800, or about $9,600 per year.”

That easily covers the cost of the initial six entry-level iPads, which retail for $499. (Apple offers versions with more onboard flash memory and optional 3G reception for up to $829.)

Newscast scripts are composed as usual. But rather than printing to paper, the final version is formatted as a PDF file and transmitted to each iPad via e-mail. The PDF translation is handled by iAnnotate by Aji.LLC, a $7 program sold and downloaded via Apple’s App Store.

A California hospital plans to distribute more than 100 Apple iPads among its health care workers to allow them look at X-ray images, EKG results and more on the portable touchscreen device, according to a new report.

Nick Volosin, director of technical services at Kaweah Health Care District in Visalia, Calif., told Network World that he bought three iPads for testing, and plans to implement more than 100 at the facility in the next two months. Various patient monitoring programs will be accessed through Citrix virtual desktop and application delivery software. Using the Citrix Receiver, the hospital will be able to have its workers access desktop applications without writing proprietary software for the iPad.

The iPads will be distributed to home health care and hospice workers, nurses, dietitians and pharmacists. Because tight supply has forced Apple to turn down volume orders, the hospital had to work with Apple directly to make such a large purchase.

Volosin told author Jon Brodkin that the iPad and its 10-hour battery life will replace a laptop for many employees, particularly because it will eliminate the need to charge multiple times throughout the day, and it doesn’t need to be turned on and off. In addition to patient-related services, employees will also be able to use the device to do traditional office tasks like check their e-mail.
