Adding to the mounting evidence that Apple plans to add cameras to its next-generation iPad, the company’s digital photography team is hiring a software engineer to create applications for the iPad platform.

In a new job listing posted this week discovered by AppleInsider, Apple revealed that it is looking for someone to fill the position of "iOS Photography Software Engineer." The role, based at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus, will ideally be filled by a "dynamic software engineer with the drive and desire to deliver great photography applications for the Mac and iPad platforms."

The job listing notes that Apple’s digital photography team has delivered applications for the Mac platform in the past, including iPhoto and Aperture. The new position will be related to text rendering and editing, as well as HTML generation, for publishing and viewing photo-based content, presumably on the Web.

Apple seeks an employee with "strong skills with established and emerging web technologies," including HTML5 and CSS. Another "key requirement" for the role is a worker who has a passion for photography.

iPad 2 Screen Parts Circulating

iFixYouri and 9to5Mac have posted photos of what is said to be the new iPad 2 screen.

At this point, we cannot tell if the resolution is higher (or "Retina") but it is definitely higher quality in terms of its build. The iPad 2’s display is also lighter, and over a mm thinner than the current iPad’s display with a smaller surrounding frame.

No other details (such as resolution) have been revealed, but the slightly thinner screen agrees with previous analyst reports that claim that the iPad 2’s screen will be 30-35% thinner as well as offering an anti-reflective coating for better outdoor usage.

FaceTime, Camera and PhotoBooth Icons Confirm Camera in iPad 2

Apple’s developer release of iOS 4.3 Beta 2 has provided more visual evidence confirming that the next iPad will carry a front facing camera as well as the Apple Camera App and Photo Booth App. The above image (homeScreenOverlayFaceTime~ipad.png) was found in the latest beta and is used by iOS to show a preview of your wallpaper selection. The current iPad uses the following image, showing only the standard iOS icons for 4.2:

In iOS 4.3 Beta 2, however, Apple has already updated this image to reflect the three new app icons that must come with a standard installation. This includes FaceTime, Camera and Photo Booth as pictured at the top.

FaceTime will allow iPad 2 owners to video conference with iPhone, iPod Touch and Mac owners. The standard Camera app will allow you to take photographs. We still can’t say for sure if there will be a back camera, as the camera app could possibly be used only for the front camera. Finally, the Photo Booth icon confirms that Apple is including their Mac OS X Photo Booth app which allows users to take fun photos and apply various filters to them. Filters also found in the beta include Thermal Camera, Mirror, X-Ray, Kaleidoscope, Light Tunnel, Squeeze, Twirl and Stretch.

iPad 2 with High Resolution Screen and SD Card Slot, iPhone 5 with A5 Processor?

Engadget claims to have some details about the upcoming iPad 2, iPhone 5 and next generation Apple TV.

The iPad 2 details are close to what has been reported. This includes a "super high resolution" screen that is akin to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display. The physical screen size is said to remain the same but will feature both front and rear cameras. One somewhat new piece of information they do provide is that they claim that the new iPad will carry an SD card slot. There had been talk and speculation about an SD card slot based on some of the earlier circulating case designs, but no real definitive statements.

Meanwhile, Engadget also claims that Apple will start transitioning their communication chipsets to those produced by Qualcomm. The move will allow for Apple to support dual-modes allowing for both Verizon and AT&T compatibility in the same hardware model. This chipset change will also advance to the iPhone 5, again allowing a single hardware model to work across both Verizon and AT&T. Right now, Apple is producing two distinct iPhone 4s to support both CDMA (Verizon) and GSM (AT&T) modes.

One of the more controversial changes made with the release of iOS 4.2 late last year was a change in the functionality of the switch on the side of the iPad, moving it from a screen rotation lock to a mute switch as seen on the iPhone. Apple CEO Steve Jobs had even reportedly responded to a customer question by noting that the change was permanent and that it would not be a user-configurable option.

Following today’s announcement that the iPhone will finally be made available in a CDMA version for use on Verizon’s network, Bloomberg reports that a version of the iPad directly compatible with its network is set to follow suit.

Verizon Wireless will sell a version of Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet computer that can connect directly to its network, posing another challenge to AT&T Inc. as the carrier’s exclusive hold on the iPhone draws to a close.

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon’s network. Shammo declined to say when the change may happen.

The most recent rumors of a CDMA iPad surfaced in late December, claiming that the next-generation iPad will come in three versions: Wi-Fi, UMTS (GSM) 3G and CDMA 3G.
