iPad Apps

MooCowMusic, the developer of the iPhone app Pianist, is bringing Pianist Pro (US $9.99 upon release) to the iPad. As Mike Grothaus pointed out in his post on Air Harp, there are lots of musical apps for the iPhone but the screen is too small to make full use of them. There won’t be a complete description of this app until the rollout on April 3rd, but what you can see now is really quite impressive.
The keys, in landscape mode, look big enough to actually play and it seems like it has as many features as some electric keyboards. It includes features like dual keyboards for the right and left hands, soft and sustain pedals/keys, multiple instrument types, a drum track accompaniment, and what looks like a lot of other useful features. I’m sure we’re already tired of hearing this oft-used phrase, but in this case size matters. You should be able to slide your fingers along the virtual ivories on the iPad’s launch day.

The iPhone is great, but it’s small. The iPad is bigger; you can cradle it, like a lap harp. Behold, Air Harp!
If fart apps are what the iPhone is all about, Air Harp is what the iPad is all about. You can sit there, with the device in you lap, and simply strum. You get 2 octaves (15 strings) of tones in G Major.

Venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) today announced that it is doubling the size of its “iFund” supporting iPhone OS-related companies to $200 million. The original iFund was launched in March 2008, and KPCB notes that the initial $100 million has been fully committed to 14 companies that have also attracted an additional $330 million in funding.
KPCB also announced iFund-supported companies have more than 20 applications in development for the soon-to-be-released iPad, with 11 available at first ship on April 3. KPCB noted the iPhone has created an inflection in mobile content consumption and the iPad will lead the next wave of innovation in mobile computing. The iFund is increasing its investment dollars to back entrepreneurs and build companies that focus on these areas. Particular areas of interest on iPad include entertainment, communication, social networking, commerce, health care, and education.

The upcoming 4.0 reference release of Apple’s iPhone OS will deliver new support for running multiple concurrent third party apps, and allow users to switch between them using a windows management mechanism similar to one made popular on the company’s Mac OS X operating system.
The technology, detailed by people familiar with Apple’s plans for the new firmware, will finally allow users to launch multiple apps in the background and quickly switch between them, as AppleInsider exclusively reported earlier this month. Currently, a running app must be quit when the user returns to the Home screen.

The launch of the iPad is helping Apple’s iTunes App Store to retain developers’ interest while preventing them from exploring alternative marketplaces for mobile software.
A report by the Wall Street Journal cited Social Gaming Network, an App Store developer, as saying that 90% of its employees were currently working on iPhone OS apps.
