iPad Apps

It’s pretty clear that new iPad owners are hitting the app store in droves. Books, games and movies are all flying off the virtual shelves. Since you may be suffering from sensory overload, or just looking for some ideas, here are some things I’ve seen that might be worth a look.

I tried Time Magazine (U.S. $4.99) and Popular Science ($4.99) magazines on the iPad. The both look striking on the luscious iPad screen, but neither one really excited me enough to get me to subscribe. Time had nice use of video. Pop Sci looked stunning, but didn’t have a lot of text. I think both magazines will need to come down below 5 bucks an issue to attract readers.

What’s SplitBrowser?

Surfing the Internet on your iPad just got better. Experience two web pages at the same time, with two independent toolbars, a division bar you can resize your pages, and viewing in portrait or landscape mode. It’s all up to you.

This app offers you an ultimate web experience. It allows you to stream a video while checking out your emails. If you want to focus on the film, try the full screen mode. Listen to music on one page while surfing the web on another, you can even look up the biography of the artist you’re listening to.

Here at Google we’re really excited about the promise of tablet computers, which will be great for browsing the web and using apps. We’ve been working hard to optimize our services for the new format – larger touchscreens, increased portability, rich sensors – and we’d like to share some information about our progress so far.

While surfing the web on your iPad, we expect many of you will want to check your Gmail. If you go to gmail.com in your browser, you’ll see something different than what you’re used to on the desktop. We’re releasing an experimental user interface for the iPad built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web app that we launched last year for the iPhone and Android devices. Those devices have large screens compared to other phones, and tablets like the iPad give us even more room to innovate. To take advantage of the iPad’s large display, we’ve created a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and messages to the right.

Dragon Dictation comes to the iPadThis should get a lot of iPad owners excited. Dragon Dictation, which has been so popular on the iPhone, is now available for the iPad.

The app is free for a limited time, and adds some new features to the original iPhone version. The app also includes a new Dragon Dictation Notes feature that lets users speak and save drafts of documents, emails, to-do lists, social media status updates, and more.

"Dragon Dictation has proven to be a must-have app for iPhone and iPod touch, so it made sense to immediately extend those benefits to iPad," said Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. "The iPad is a unique and remarkable device, and with the Dragon Dictation App users can experience added flexibility and convenience as they quickly convert speech into text."
