Pinball HD Review for iPad, 3D Pinball at its FinestIf you thought Gameprom’s three top pinball titles looked good on the iPhone’s 3.5 inch display, wait till you feast your eyes on the iPad version. Pinball HD for the iPad includes all three tables; Wild West, The Deep and Jungle Style, featuring amazing new graphics with added enhancements.

Review
Gameprom’s Pinball HD is a 3-pack pinball game bundle all rolled into one app, made specifically for the iPad. All presented using gorgeous 3D graphics with realistic physics, you’ll get a Western style table (Wild West), an ocean theme table (The Deep) and a jungle theme table (Jungle Style). The tables can be played in both landscape mode ‘full table’ view and portrait mode ‘flying-table’ view (with the camera following the action).

To choose which table to play on, simply swipe up to play The Deep, swipe down to play Jungle Style or touch the screen to play the default table, Wild West. Controls are exactly like those found on the smaller iPhone version; tap the left side of the screen to activate the left flippers and the other side of the screen for the right, while giving the iPad a little shake will help move the table.

A clear set of instructions are provided with the game, along with local and global leaderboards. Although, I haven’t had the opportunity to try this out, the game also provides a stereoscopic imaging option which will make the table appear in 3D using a pair of 3D glasses.

I can’t say enough about Pinball HD’s graphics. They are absolutely stunning. Every detail provided in the smaller version can now truly be appreciated on the larger screen. The tables are not only bigger, but are better than ever before. If you want to show off what your iPad can do, this is the game to do it with.

Recommendation
Pinball HD for iPad comes highly recommended to pinball fans of all ages. It’s a triple fun pack filled with great graphics, realistic gameplay that will provide many entertaining hours to come. Pinball HD is available now at the App Store for $2.99.

CoPilot Live HD, first iPad navigation app, approvedHaving survived the crucible that is Apple’s App Store approval process, CoPilot Live HD has become the first available iPad-specific GPS application. The app is a reworking of the iPhone version of the CoPilot Live app for iPhone, featuring a revised interface that takes better advantage of the iPad’s larger screen.

The app features 2D and 3D maps of North America stored locally on the device, so users won’t need to maintain a data connection while navigating from point A to B. However, the app will need to make use of the iPad’s GPS antenna for positioning, so this is a purely iPad 3G affair. Sorry, iPad Wi-Fi users.

Steve hates the New York Times iPad appThat’s the word from Gawker. Ryan Tate is quoting people close to the paper who say the Apple CEO is very unhappy with the free New York Times Editor’s Choice app, mostly because it leaves out a lot of the content of the daily Times.

The trimmed-down Times on iPad stems from a reported deal that Amazon made with the paper for the Kindle. Amazon has an exclusive on the full content of the Times for e-readers. On the Kindle, you have to subscribe to read the Times, even though the full content is free and available on the web. The Amazon deal apparently allows competitors to have the full text, but not at a lower price.

Earlier this month, the New York Times raised subscription prices on the Kindle from
US$13.99 to $19.99 a month.

Dropbox app brings iPad support, fantastic external editingThe Dropbox team updated the Dropbox app today with full iPad compatibility and the option to choose which app will open a document. It’s a very welcome refresh for an application that many users (myself included) depend on. As usual, the app is free. Let’s look at the improvements.

First of all, the cosmetic changes. While in the landscape orientation, Dropbox offers the same split view that Mail and several others use. Pictures and documents look great and legible on the large screen. Across the toolbar are icons to jump to your favorites, adjust your account settings, email a public link to a file (or copy it to the clipboard), mark a file as a favorite and finally choose an app to open a file.

In portrait orientation the sidebar disappears and you’re left with a full-screen view of your document and a few icons at the top. It looks super.

I fell in love with racing games thanks to Ridge Racer for the original Sony Playstation. I played the whole franchise, beat every track and learned the intricacies of every car. Even today I’ll pull out the Playstation Portable for a run around Ridge City. Could another racer grab me the way RR had?

Thanks to Firemint, the answer is yes. Real Racing HD (RRHD) looks great, sounds great, features well-conceived depth of play, effective use of the accelerometer, customization and more. In fact, it’s one of the apps I use to show off the iPad.

When the game is first launched, you’re presented with a cinematic* and then the welcome screen. Before you go tapping around, take a moment to enjoy it. The camera gently sways back and forth. Your current car can be seen in a bay (more on that later). Light plays across the car in the foreground.

Stream audio and video to an iPadWhile the iPad is a great device for listening to music or watching movies and TV shows, one feature that it’s missing is the ability to stream music and video to it from an iTunes library on your computer.

With Apple’s AirTunes feature, you can stream music from one library to certain devices, and you can also share an iTunes library on your local network to be able to listen to music or play video from it.

But Apple left this functionality out of the iPad, treating it more like a mobile device than the replacement for a laptop that it will become in many homes. Given that the iPad doesn’t have a great deal of capacity—especially in the 16GB entry-level models—the ability to stream could come in handy. You may want to stream music to listen to while you’re reading a book, without having to worry exactly what music you last added from your plentiful iTunes library to the iPad. Or you may want to watch a movie stored on your Mac. As the saying goes, there’s an app for that—more than one, actually, although they’re far from perfect.

For starters, there’s what you might called “passive” streaming of music from an iTunes library to the iPad. You can use Rogue Amoeba’s $25 Airfoil ( ), the latest version of which I discussed in a recent article, in conjunction with the company’s free Airfoil Speakers app (while not yet optimized for the iPad, you can run it in a small window or pixel-doubled mode). You’re limited, though, to streaming from the iTunes library on a computer, and can’t choose what to listen to from the iPad. So while this is a good idea if you just want to use the iPad as, say, a speaker when you’re listening to music in the kitchen, it’s a bit limited for serious usage.
