Whether you’re just hanging around your back yard, going to the beach, or waiting to set off a huge cache of fireworks, there are always a lot of fun things to do over the Independence Day holiday in the U.S. Here are some apps that can help you enjoy the fun during the holiday.
Grilling: Weber’s On the Grill (US$4.99 – separate apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad). One of the staples of the holiday weekend is the family barbecue, with friends and family enjoying the outdoors and stuffing themselves with grilled delectables. The app has 250 classic recipes, an additional 40 recipes for rubs, marinades, and sauces, and more. You can store ingredients from any recipe in a grocery list for quick shopping, send the grocery lists to others (good if you’re sharing the picnic duties), read tips on grilling, and even watch short grilling videos.
Last, but not least, there’s a grill timer right in the app that tells you when to flip that steak. I personally use this app with my Weber Genesis gas grill and it’s a winner.
Sun protection: Coppertone MyUVAlert (Free). If you’re going to the beach or spending time outdoors, this free app can help you with sun protection. Enter a location, and you get a local UV index forecast and recommendations on what sun protection gear to use. The app works for the entire family, since you can get sunscreen product profiles for every family member. You’ll never forget to reapply sunscreen, since the app creates reminders based on product, activity, and personal preferences. Me? I’ll just stay inside and have a beer or three.
If you’re a moviegoer, and would like to use an app that gives you the ability to intuitively discover, learn about films and purchase tickets, there is an app waiting for you on the App Store.
AppSpark recently released Movies Now HD. The app has been developed to simplify your movie-going experience by allowing you to purchase cinema tickets on the go. The app features a very stylish and simple user interface.
Movies Now HD provides instant, location-based show-times for cinemas. It delivers reviews and high-quality movie trailers to help you decide what movie to watch. With movietickets.com as the online ticketing partner, the app supports over 11,000 screens across the US and over 3,000 screens across Canada. Using a simple ticket purchasing system, you can skip ticket lines at the cinema.
Whether you’re a true gourmet or someone who can’t do anything more complicated than pulling a frozen pizza out of the oven, you probably enjoy going out to eat. Wouldn’t it be nice if your iPad could help you find some new restaurants? Whether you’re on the road for business or hanging out in your home town, these apps can help you break out of your rut and experience something new.
OpenTable (Free)
OpenTable for iPad is designed to make restaurant reservations, but it can do more than that, helping you discover an array of dining options you may not be familiar with, even if you’re a native and not just passing through. When you first start the app, it asks for permission to use your location; tap yes and you will almost immediately see a Google map showing nearby restaurants participating in the Open Table network. Tap on one of the map pins to get the restaurant name and available reservation times; if you’re interested in learning more you can tap on the arrow to get more information. The restaurant details page includes the address, a photo, a description, and diner reviews. A link to the restaurant’s web site, if available, offers menu information, and you can also mark restaurants as your favorite.
Making reservations on OpenTable for iPad is as easy as tapping a time on the restaurant details page; you will then be prompted to log in to your OpenTable account if you like (not required) and enter your name, phone number, and email address. You can also add special requests if you like, though of course there’s no guarantee. If you do decide to join the OpenTable network, you will receive dining offers and earn points toward free meals at participating restaurants.
The OpenTable for iPad app is a pleasant surprise, because it offers a lot of information about each restaurant and is very well-organized. Since it is reservation-based, the selection of restaurants is a cut above the usual every day, so there’s a targeted selection of choices, all generally excellent.
Hulu has finally announced their long-rumored subscription service, and it’s a doozy. It’s called Hulu Plus. For US$9.99 per month, you’ll get you ad-supported access to the full current seasons of most shows and full back seasons of select shows. Plus, brand new Hulu Plus apps for the iPhone and the iPad will bring the television to you. The apps work over either WiFi or 3G, though the iPhone version requires iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.The service sounds pretty good — I would have to untangle my internet service from my cable bill, but otherwise, a system like this might just replace my cable box.
I can’t think of another iPad app that looks quite as striking as Emerald Observatory. This US $0.99 app is the kind of thing you’d be proud to display if it was a physical object; even when it’s running on the iPad, I’m tempted to leave it on as a conversation piece.
The single display gives you your local time, the position of the sun, the rise and set times of the sun and moon (and the 5 brightest planets), twilight start and end times, the current moon phase, a display of day and night on a world map, the current day and date (with a leap year indicator), and the ability to move forward or backward in time in order to see different planetary alignments and sun positions.
