In addition to a great library of films for kids, the NFB Films app offers features, documentaries, and a whole lot more.

Do you like indie films? Documentaries? Animation? Then I’m about to make your day: NFB Films for iPad lets you watch over a thousand movies on your tablet. For free.

“NFB” stands for National Film Board, a bona fide Canadian treasure. The app taps the NFB’s mammoth library of documentaries, features, animated films, trailers (for upcoming NFB releases), and more.

All the movies are streamed to your iPad (via Wi-Fi only), but there’s also an ingenious “watch later” option that downloads a selected movie for offline viewing–great if you’re about to get on a plane or something. These downloads expire after 48 hours, which strikes me as more than fair. (Apple’s own App Store movie rentals last only 24 hours, and you have to pay for those.)

NFB Films includes a Channels section where you can browse various categories, including Documentaries, History & War, and Environment. There’s a search option, natch, and you can add movies to a favorites (sorry, “favourites”) list for easier access.

WarShip HD for iPad Review“Cannons to the left of me, cannons to the right…” Get ready and prepare to defend yourself against powerful warships in Goorusoft’s WarShip HD for iPad. Stay away from the enemy’s massive guns and steer your way into a perfect angle to blast them into smithereens.

Review
WarShip HD for iPad is a simple Pirates of the Caribbean type battleship game where the main weapons were cannons. The premise is simple; blow your enemy out of the water before your enemy can do it to you. You begin with a warship with minimal armament, armor and steering/control which you can upgrade during the game. As you sink ships during your battles, these ships will drop their trophies which add up to your saved money that you can use to buy ships or upgrade your existing one.

Sunken ships not only will drop their trophies, but on occasions, will also drop in a health pack, which you can pick up to help repair your damaged ship. You must hurry in picking up these treasures as pirate ships patrol the seas just waiting to pluck them from the water before you can. The game starts off easy but as you progress along the game, you’ll find yourself outnumbered and outgunned, making it harder to level up.

Ready to fling your iPhone or iPod Touch to launch a virtual dart into your iPad screen? It sounds a little scary. Isn’t it?

The folks from Key Lime 314 have developed an interesting game that transforms your iPad into a digital dartboard. The iPad app is called KL Dartboard.

KL Dartboard connects your iPad and your iPhone for a new dart throwing experience. Start by running the KL Dartboard app on your iPad, and KL Darts or KL Darts Pro on your secondary device (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS/3G or iPod Touch).

Average e-reader doesn’t measure up to Kindle, iBooks
3 out of 5 stars

by Lex Friedman, Macworld.com

I’ve recently looked at several e-reader apps, including the Kindle, iBooks, and Stanza offerings. Barnes & Noble, the book retailer behind the Nook e-reading device, offers its own e-reading app for iPad users, the awkwardly-named BN eReader for iPad (which is not to be confused with the iPhone- and iPod touch-friendly B&N eReader).

My chief requirement when evaluating e-reader apps is that they be able to fade away just like paper books do, so that you’re concentrating on the book itself and not the app. BN eReader just barely succeeds in this regard, because of a few frustrating weaknesses with the app’s text rendering. Fortunately, most of the annoyances are avoidable when reading for long stretches at a time.

Before we get into that, though, let’s highlight the plusses of BN eReader. First off, the app offers an excellent degree of text customization options: You can choose from eight fonts in five sizes, adjust line-spacing, and toggle full justification on and off—all from within a panel that’s never more than two taps away as you read. (As in the Kindle and iBooks apps, tapping on the book text in BN eReader toggles the presence of its pagination slider and toolbar.)

Gambling is fun. Who out there doesn’t like to throw down a bet every now and then, whether it’s a poker night with your friends, shooting dice while avoiding the cops in a back alley (you know who you are), or stepping up the tables at your favorite casino, we all like to wager a few bets. Astraware Casino is hoping to fill the digital gambling void in your life on both the iPhone and iPad. Both versions of the game are virtually identical, so if you need to get your fix on the train to work, ponying up $0.99 might be in your best interest. Since the iPhone version has been out forever, we’re going to mainly focus on the iPad edition here.

For the aforementioned $0.99 price point, you get a Universal iOS game, meaning the same purchase will work both on your iPhone and iPad. More developers need to take notice here and make that happen. And in the case of Astraware Casino, you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck. With 11 games to play, there’s plenty of choice to satisfy that gambling twitch. This has become one of my go-to games when I have a few minutes and want to play something between meetings or while waiting around for whatever might be taking too long in my day. I’ll start off with a few rounds of Slots, hoping to hit it big, then I’ll move over to the Craps tables and shoot the dice looking for a hard 8 before hopping over to play some Blackjack or Texas Hold ‘Em. There is so much content here for your money.
