New iPad News

With the iPad 2 just hitting the market a few months ago, it should come as no surprise that the public just wants more and more and more. Now rumors of an iPad 3 have become more than just rumors and plenty of people are starting to turn their attention to what will actually be in these new devices. Apple moves quicker than most when it comes to improving their products and while there are a number of different new features that will most likely be included in the third iteration of the iPad, the one making the most news is the supposed screen resolution.

iPad 3 To Boast a Retina Display

According to several different sources it appears that the screen resolution for the iPad 3 could actually be about twice what the resolution is currently. All of these rumors popped up because of a couple of people managing to get a look at the screen resolution settings of a Twitter framework – of all things – and that little tip has started a bit of a tidal wave of speculation.

While current screen resolution settings are currently sitting at a very respectable 768 x 1024 the framework of the Twitter app makes it appear as though the images will appear with dimensions of 1536 x 2048. This number of pixels would be unheard of on any of the existing tablet PCs and it is the main reason that there is so much speculation about what the new iPad 3 is going to be doing. While increasing the screen resolution to twice what it currently is may seem like quite a tall order, but it is actually not something that is completely unheard of, especially when dealing with Apple. When introducing the “Retina” display on the iPhone 4, Apple had to jack up the screen resolution of their phones from 480 x 320 to 960 x 640 with an increase of pixels of 326 per inch.

Future iPad Models Referenced in iOS 5

After iOS 5 was announced this past Monday, developers were able to download the beta version for the latest iOS software update. It appears that some who poked around in the iOS 5 code found some interesting hints of future iPad versions. The references include mention of iPad3,1 and iPad3,2.

There are currently 3 versions of iPad 2 referenced in the iOS code as iPad2,1 (Wi-Fi), iPad2,2 (GSM), and iPad2,3 (CDMA). The latest news suggests Apple is getting ready for inclusion of iPad 3 into its software at some point in the near future. If Apple is playing around with iPad 3 code in its iOS software now, it seems more than likely the iPad 3 would be launched in early 2012 – on schedule with first-generation iPad and iPad 2 launches.

OtterBox iPad Cases Are Here!

For those who can’t get enough of the “iPad 3 is coming out in late 2011” rumors, this latest news will make your eyebrow raise even higher in anticipation of the next iPad model.

To temper the hype over the mention of iPad 3 models in iOS 5, it should be noted that indications of potential future products within previous iOS code doesn’t necessarily mean those products will definitely be released. Previous iOS versions have mentioned iPhone3,2 which has not surfaced into an actual Apple product yet. But who wants to think about that? iPad 3 will come out eventually, and all reasonable points show that may be in March or April of 2012 at the latest.

More iPad 3 Rumors: Late 2011 Release, Quad Core A6 Processor

Did you think the iPad 3 rumors from previous months were gone for good? Well, they‘re not. I know, we’re rolling our eyes at the rumors too, but they may be worth mentioning. Even though these rumors seem to be far fetched at this time, we’d like to leave the door open for us to pull the “we told you so!” routine should they actually come true at some point. Everybody likes a gloater, right?

Asian research firm CLSA is suggesting Apple will release the next version of its tablet, iPad 3, before the holiday season at the end of 2011. WSJ.com’s MarketBeat blog posted a short story about the iPad 3 rumors today.

“While most vendors appear fixated on matching the specs and features of iPad2, our checks suggest Apple will release iPad3 in time for the holiday season, sporting a better display and LTE capabilities.”

CLSA went on to mention they don’t expect a new LTE iPhone in 2011.

Another juicy rumor comes from the senior editor at Microprocessor Report, Linley Gwennap, by way of Barrons.com. Gwennap gives some interesting insight into Apple’s iOS processors and how that technology is giving Apple an edge over its competitors.

He writes that Apple:

“has gone for bigger chips than the ‘merchant’ silicon offered by vendors such as Nvidia because it can get greater performance at the same price: Apple doesn’t pay the markup it would have to give to Nvidia or another company. Larger chip, same money, in other words.”

Gwennap goes onto say that the next processor we’ll see from Apple will most likely be the A6 chip that includes quad core technology. The current A5 chip in iPad 2 is a dual core processor. Running much too hot for iPhone 5, the new chip will probably only be included in iPad 3.

Apple OKs Components for iPad 3
iPad 2 components from iFixIt.com

In a report filed by DigiTimes today, Apple has begun the certification process for some of the components included in the upcoming iPad 3. Apparently, many Taiwanese manufacturers have already landed their official certification, according to sources based out of Taiwan.

“Taiwan-based component makers for backlight modules and light bars have received certification from Apple, however, the certification of panels is still in progress, added industry sources.” The reports also noted that the iPad 3 will be ready for launch in 2012, which seems accurate compared to Apple’s stringent release schedule for their devices.

Rumors have been circulating that Apple could potentially switch to Samsung’s AMOLED displays for their third-generation device. If these sources are accurate though, Apple will not be changing screens and will instead continue to install 9.7″ LCD panels in their future tablets, despite the differing tablet sizes that have been emerging in the marketplace.

iPad Skins

Steve Jobs has gone on the record claiming that, “7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad.” He also boldly claims that 7-inch tablets are “going to be DOA – dead on arrival.” Many new tablet manufacturers have been opting to release 7-inch models of their devices, touting that these smaller and lighter machines offer a superior tablet experience. After spending some time with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″, I can definitely appreciate the subtle difference in size and weight. So while the iPad’s current screen size is extremely capable, I do wish that Apple would expand into various models for consumers with different tablet needs.

The most pervasive iPad 3 rumor currently is that the device will use Apple’s patented Retina display, increasing the screen resolution to 2048×1536. This enhancement would effectively double the iPad’s current resolution, much like it did for the iPhone 4. The phone’s resolution increased from 320×480 to 640×960.

iPad Touch Panel Makers Further Quash Any iPad 3 Launch Rumors for 2011

DigiTimes reported yesterday on some news from component makers for iPad. Touch panel manufacturers suggest an upgrade from iPad 2 to iPad 3 is unlikely for this year as the higher resolution technology for Apple’s tablet is “still at the initial planning stage.” But there is also mention of a different communication format possibly coming with the next iPad version.

As for the iPad 3 rumor, the sources from upstream component makers pointed out that the new rumored device should be an upgrade version of iPad 2 or an iPad 2 version that supports different communication format. Since Apple just released its iPad 2 in early March and is ready to start mass shipping, launching the iPad 3 would simply bite off share from its iPad 2.

DigiTimes also notes its sources have not received any direction regarding iPad 3 components and that with iPad 2’s strong demand, iPad 3 won’t be available anytime soon.

It’s becoming more apparent that iPad 3 will launch around the yearly release schedule of the first-generation and iPad 2 launches, within the 1st quarter of 2012. iPad 1 was launched in the US on April 3, 2010, iPad 2 was launched on March 11, 2011.

iPad 3 Rumors Dead in the Water

There have been a lot of rumors in recent months for some kind of iPad 3 to be launched toward the end of 2011. Some thought it would be a 6 inch, 7 inch, or 10 inch tablet, or one with more features but keeping the original display size intact.

But one sentence from Wednesday’s keynote speaker, Steve Jobs, may have put all of those rumors to rest – “We think 2011 is clearly going to be the year of iPad 2.”

It’s unlikely Jobs would have made such a definitive statement if Apple had any thought of putting out the iPad 3 in 2011. So for now, even though rumors have been swirling around for months, it seems the iPad 3 will not be seen in 2011.

If that’s the case, it’s almost certain the next generation iPad will be launched in early 2012. Likely additions could be Retina Display, Thunderbolt technology, increased storage, or more powerful cameras.
