In-depth review: Apple's IPad and iPhone OS 3.2The iPad is not a big smartphone nor a scaled down laptop. It’s not really like any tablet that’s come before it. And for this reason, it will delight users ready for something new, and confuse and upset people who expect it to be something old and familiar.

iPad Sales Estimated to Have Already Surpassed 500,000At its ‘Sneak Peek Into the Future’ media event today, Apple announced several major feature additions, including multitasking and an in-app ad network, to iPhone OS 4.0 for release this summer.

The most significant new feature of iPhone OS 4.0 highlighted by Jobs is multitasking, which recent rumors had indicated might be coming. Apple had not previously implemented this feature out of concern for battery life and overall performance, although Jobs said that the company had found a way to implement multi-tasking without these negative effects.

Apple reportedly planning a smaller-size iPad for 1Q11, says Digitimes ResearchApple is reportedly scheduling a smaller 5- to 7-inch version of the iPad that is expected to launch as soon as the first quarter of 2011, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo.

Kuo, citing talks with upstream component sources, said Apple’s smaller-size iPad will be priced below US$400 and will target the highly-portable mobile device market and consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input.

Apple retail to hold 7AM training, all staffers may get iPadsExclusive: Apple is reportedly calling all of its retail store employees to a top secret, all hands on deck meeting tomorrow at 7AM to train them on the iPad, and will possibly involve each team member receiving a 16GB WiFi iPad.

Rumors that Apple might hand out iPads to its retail employees first appeared during a corporate town hall meeting with Ron Johnson (the company’s Senior Vice President of Retail Operations), where the subject was casually mentioned but not confirmed, one person familiar with Apple’s retail operations said. Apple previously assigned its employees free iPhones and iPod touches.

A second person reported that the iPad retail launch will begin with an overnight security patrol to monitor each store’s inventory, which will continue even after a manager and team of five to ten employees begin the day at 3AM. A third person confirmed that the reports are consistent with Apple’s other product launches, adding that "security guards are routine for a product launch, with the guards partly there to handle the waiting lines."

Apple makes iPad App Store software accessible through iTunesApp Store software that will be available for download for Apple’s iPad when it launches in the U.S. on Saturday can now be viewed through the iTunes Store via the desktop client.

Apple has said more than 1,000 iPad-specific applications will be available for download when the new hardware goes on sale April 3. A search for the terms "iPad," "HD" or "XL" in the iTunes Store gives users an option to narrow their search to iPad-only applications.

Many of the applications available will be familiar to existing iPhone and iPod touch users, as developers have released new versions of their popular applications formatted for the iPad‘s larger 9.7-inch screen. Applications such as "Scrabble for iPad" ($9.99), "Brushes – iPad Edition" ($9.99), and "Twitterific for iPad" (free) can all be previewed through iTunes.

Apple Specialist locations will also sell iPad this SaturdayIn addition to all Apple retail stores and most Best Buy locations, the iPad will also be available for purchase at select U.S. Apple Specalists, people familiar with the matter have told AppleInsider.

The information that select Apple Specialists locations will offer the iPad on its April 3 release date has remained quiet until now because Apple has allegedly placed resellers under a nondisclosure agreement, preventing them from pre-advertising the availability of the iPad or accessories.

Specific locations where the iPad will be available are unknown, but with Apple sold out of its initial run of preorders and Best Buy rumored to receive just 15 per store, those locations will be another option for those who want to pick up an iPad on Saturday.
