New Apple TV Adds Netflix, iTunes Rentals and iPad Streaming for $99At Apple’s special event today, the company announced a redesigned and re-formulated Apple TV. As expected, the new device comes with support for Netflix, streams content and offers affordable rental pricing for TV shows.

The new Apple TV will be available later this month (you can pre-order it now) for $99.99. While most of the changes to the device were expected, not everything that was predicted was announced.

For instance, although the new device sports an A4 processor like the iPhone 4 and iPad, it isn’t being classified as an “iOS” device. Presumably at its core, the new Apple TV is running iOS, or at least something very similar to iOS, but the App Store is not coming to the television, at least not directly.

Because content is not stored on the device, instead streamed from a computer or from an Internetservice, Apple has introduced a new rental pricing plan. TV show rentals are just $0.99 for HD and first-run movies are $4.99 for HD. These prices are very competitive, especially in the HD space.

How to Make Free Calls with Your iPadOne complaint about the iPad in the lead-up to its launch was that it wasn’t a phone. This is arguably a little like complaining that a fridge is not a toaster. But it’s okay. It turns out the iPad is a phone after all.

Well, sort of. Read on.

Two different approaches

Early on, someone at Apple leaked the little secret or some smart cookie figured out and reported that it was actually possible to turn the iPad into a VoIP phone, by plugging in a USB headset using the optional Camera Connection kit.

The Camera Connection kit, a $29 accessory, includes two adapters that plug into the iPad’s lone connectivity port. One is a smart card reader, the other has a USB port. You plug in the USB adapter, then plug a headset into it.

We discovered that in fact you don’t need adapter or headset. With the right software—such as Skype or Toktumi’s Line2 for iPhone—the iPad’s built-in microphone and speakers turn it into a workable, if not great, speaker phone.

iOS 4.2 for iPad coming in November, adds wireless printing and Air PlayApple on Wednesday showed off iOS 4.2 for the iPad, including folders, multitasking, support for wireless printing, and streaming of audio, video and photos through the new Air Play feature.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs showed off the new printing capabilities in iOS 4.2. When printing, tasks will be included in the “Print Center” icon in the multitasking bar, accessed by double tapping the Home button.

Jobs showed off the ability to include multiple icons in folders, as can be done with iOS 4 on the iPhone and iPod touch. He also showed off the multitasking capabilities that will come with the new software.

Jobs also mentioned that Air Tunes has become Air Play, which will allow users to stream audio, video and photos over Wi-Fi.

PadFoot Stand for iPad

What do you think about this little iPad stand, called the PadFoot? The tiny slug of plastic has a single slot that holds the tablet by just one corner, or it can be slid underneath to angle the touch-screen up for typing. It is surely a very minimal design, but it looks like it may also offer minimal support.

You need a fairly hefty chunk of plastic to keep the iPad stable when upright, as I found when testing the MoviePeg for the iPad. The MoviePeg consists of two similarly-functioning wedges, and despite being bigger and doubling up on pieces, it had a hard time with anything but a shallow angle in landscape-orientation. I have some trouble believing that the PadFoot could do any of what it seems to be managing in the photos, unless it has a very tight fit.

Corkulous for iPadBrainstorming tool offers a great way to map out ideas
4 out of 5 mice

Think of Appigo’s Corkulous as a corkboard for your iPad. Corkulous tries to make it easy to organize thoughts for everything from remodeling a room to planning a birthday or coming vacation—or practically anything else you’d like to brainstorm.

Corkulous sports an array of objects—labels, post-it notes, to-dos, photos and contacts—that you can place on your virtual corkboards. To access them, you “pull” open a file cabinet in the bottom-left of the screen and drag them onto the board. You can even drag out more corkboards onto your board, so you can drill down on a topic.

Space junkies like me put their names in for Space Shuttle Launch Tweetups (and sometimes make it in!), obsessively track NASA Twitter feeds, pour over announcements for any hint that the agency might recommit to the Shuttle and more manned space missions. It can be exhausting trying to keep up with all the National Aeronautics and Space Administration does. There’s already an Apple iPhone app to help people like me stay in step. Now NASA has added a free iPad app that takes advantage of the device’s lovely large screen.
