Advertising on print publications repurposed for Apple’s iPad draws a fee up to five times more than buying placement on the same content provider’s website.

While the news doesn’t quite mean the iPad will "save" print publishing, as online advertising is a fraction of what publications receive in print, it is a sign that the iPad could become a major factor in revenue for those in the news business, according to the Associated Press.

The report from Andrew Vanacore said it’s likely that news organizations will hold back free content from their websites in the future, opting instead to provide news to users who subscribe on tablet-style devices like the iPad. And although Apple has already sold 2 million iPads, the market will have to become much larger for it to have a major effect on a news organization’s bottom line.

JPMorgan Chase & Co., which was the exclusive advertiser of the New York Times application for the first 60 days, also revealed that the click-through rate for iPad advertisements is a remarkably high 15 percent. The report noted that the online average for people viewing an advertisement is about one-tenth of a percent.

iPad readers also spend a great deal more time with content. Publisher Conde Nast revealed that the average reader spends 60 minutes with a monthly issue on Apple’s device, compared with the average website visit length of less than 5 minutes per month.

One of the biggest problems with online advertising is the unlimited amount of space available. In a newspaper or magazine, space is finite based on the number of printed pages, adding more value. Online, limitless space makes advertising less valuable. The AP also noted that online ad networks allow advertisers to get placement at discounted rates. But the supply-and-demand issues haven’t yet appeared in the iPad, which has been on the market for just over two months.

Thirteen fifth-grade students in Florida were given free iPads by Apple, and could appear in a forthcoming advertising campaign after they were photographed excitedly eyeing the company’s new hardware.

The students at Watergrass Elementary in Wesley Chapel were photographed last month staring at Apple’s new iPad. The school’s instructional technology specialist sent the photos to a local Apple sales representative who sells the company’s devices to educational institutions.

"My heart melted," Apple’s Andrea Barr told the St. Petersburg Times. One of the pictures showed the children genuinely excited by the sight of the iPad, almost like something you’d see in an advertisement.

Now, John Couch, Apple’s vice president of education, is interesting in potentially using the photos for that purpose.

Barr forwarded the photos to her bosses, who decided to reward the 13 children seen in the photos with iPads. Apple is mailing the hardware to their homes in the coming weeks. And in the near future, they could be a part of Apple’s campaign to promote the device.

The children were informed this week that they will receive iPads, news that excited them and made the students the envy of their peers. The fifth graders were also given a demo of the hardware by Barr. One 10-year-old said he’ll use his iPad for research and playing games.

Real Simple iPad Magazine App Time Inc. revealed it would develop iPad apps for seven more of its brands this year, including a series of paid apps from lifestyle magazine Real Simple.

Speaking May 27 during a Time Warner investor day, Time Inc. chairman and CEO Ann Moore provided some of the first details on them.

The Real Simple app will launch under the banner “No Time To…” and offer solutions to cooking, cleaning and beauty problems, in keeping with the print magazine’s brand proposition, said Paul Greenberg, president of digital for Time Inc.’s Lifestyle Group. They’ll cost $4.99 each and roll out beginning in the fourth quarter, simultaneously on the iPhone, iPad and Google’s Android devices.

The Real Simple app will follow iPad apps Time Inc. has already launched for its Time and Entertainment Weekly magazines.

There are skeptics who question the business benefit e-readers will bring magazines, despite the hope that they’ll help the industry offset its advertising declines and capture circulation revenue. Moore spared no enthusiasm for the Apple device and the anticipated wave of other e-readers, pronouncing them a “game changer” for magazines with their ability to charge consumers for content.

“It’ll be the opportunity Time Inc. is waiting for,” she said.

Etude sheet music app now available for iPadiPad owners looking to get in a little piano practice might want to check out Wonder Warp Software’s Etude; the sheet music and piano-instruction iPhone app received an update on Wednesday, adding in iPad compatibility.

While Etude’s iPad version retains most of its iPhone features, the app’s interface has been redesigned explicitly for the tablet. Sheet music, previously limited to a few measures at a time, is now displayed by the page (in portrait mode). Users can manually turn the page by flicking left or right when not in auto-play mode; otherwise, the app will automatically flow to the next measure. While in a piece, users can adjust its settings by changing the speed of Etude’s auto-play (ranging from 1/4x to 2x), or by choosing to hide the on-screen keyboard or top navigational bar.

Information about the piece, such as its composer, style, and length, can be displayed via popover; also included are links to Wikipedia and the iTunes Store.

If you’re going on a car trip and want to bring your new iPad along for the kids as you ride, you might want to consider putting together a super simple presentation system that fits easily onto any existing seat back or can be slung between the two front seats.

Behold the iBag, which TUAW discussed briefly back in a March post about cheap accessories. A few enhancements will transform your iBag into the perfect iPad presentation system; it’s a veritable iPad car kit!

Here are a few points to keep in mind when creating and using your iBag car kit:

  • Duct tape will ensure the integrity of the holes that you punch into the zip bag. You can add those holes with a simple, paper-style hole puncher, by the way.
  • Next to duct tape, Velcro is man’s best friend. Use Velcro cable wraps (complete with hooks and eyes) to connect your bag to the headrest or to a between-the-seats hanger.
  • Make sure the close tab is up when the bag is closed. This lets you unzip just enough to connect your car sound system to your iPad’s audio jack without losing the extra side support from the bag. (I personally use a jack-to-cassette player adapter.)
  • Yes, you can touch the iPad screen through the bag. It’s the magic of capacitive interfaces in action! (And yes, it’s not as great as touching the screen directly.)
  • Make sure you rent your movies before you leave home because, as a rule, hotel and motel Wi-Fi service kind of stinks. It took us nearly three hours to rent Pokemon 2000. (That’s not an endorsement of the movie … seriously.)

iPads help perform surgery, capture history

Not satisfied that the magical and revolutionary Apple tablet is helping marine mammals communicate their displeasure with the despoilage of the majestic oceans? Fortunately, the iPad is no unitasker; it’s being put to good use in both inner and outer space.

First up, CrunchGear points to this video of Japanese surgeons using the iPad as a display for reference during an operation. The iPad appears to show CT images and possibly a video loop as well; it’s covered with a sterile plastic drape. Any translation efforts welcome — and if other physicians are using the iPad in similar fashion, do let us know.
