The Line For the iPad Starts Behind This GuyThe iPad doesn’t go on sale until Saturday, but the line has already started in front of Apple’s flagship store in New York City. Okay, there’s only one guy in line so far, Greg, but if you want to pick up your pre-ordered iPad you are going to have to get behind him. Unless you go to another store. Or just wait for it to be delivered to your house.

Anyway, this guy is determined to sit in front of the Apple store for two days and nights. The video below was sent to us by Zoltan Kaprinay, a Hungarian tourist who came to New York to pick up his own iPad on Saturday. He was scoping out the Apple store and captured the footage below.

Nobody expects iPhone-long lines for this launch, but for the Mac faithful there’s always a badge of honor that comes with being first.

Answering your #1 question, as fast as we canEarlier today, we asked you (via Twitter and @ask_tuaw) for your top inquiries about the product everyone’s talking about. While we can’t give you first-person photos and video — yet — we can give you an answer, straight from the lab and the lap, to the most popular question: Can you read iBooks in direct sunlight?

The answer, surprisingly enough: Yes, you can. Even in bright sun, the high-contrast black type on a white page background was clearly legible, says our experimenter. In fact, the display looks quite a bit like the Kindle’s e-ink screen under those lighting conditions.

First Look: Foto Brush Pro on iPadOne of the more popular genres of iPad app appearing close to launch time seems to be artistic or photography tools. The video above shows Foto Brush Pro from Bobby Software running on an iPad. The app has been available for iPhone and iPod touch under the name Photo Brush for quite some time, and is now expanding to fill the vast pixel space of the iPad.

Apple makes iPad App Store software accessible through iTunesApp Store software that will be available for download for Apple’s iPad when it launches in the U.S. on Saturday can now be viewed through the iTunes Store via the desktop client.

Apple has said more than 1,000 iPad-specific applications will be available for download when the new hardware goes on sale April 3. A search for the terms "iPad," "HD" or "XL" in the iTunes Store gives users an option to narrow their search to iPad-only applications.

Many of the applications available will be familiar to existing iPhone and iPod touch users, as developers have released new versions of their popular applications formatted for the iPad‘s larger 9.7-inch screen. Applications such as "Scrabble for iPad" ($9.99), "Brushes – iPad Edition" ($9.99), and "Twitterific for iPad" (free) can all be previewed through iTunes.

Apple iPad FAQ’sIn my column in The Times today, I reviewed the Apple iPad—twice. Once for the techies who care only about specs and feature lists, the other for regular people.

There’s never enough room to say everything when the product is this different, so you, lucky subscriber to my e-mail newsletter, get this special bonus edition: Pogue’s iPad FAQ’s. These are the most frequently asked questions I’ve received about the iPad.

Q: I don’t get it from your column. Should I get the iPad or not?

A: Well, I thought I made it clear that it depends on your mindset. It’s a brilliant machine, a category-creator, a joy to use. I think it will be a big hit. The apps coming out for it represent some of the most exciting software ideas in a long time.

If you need a laptop, though, get a laptop.

Q: Can it print?

A: No. You can create documents on it (for example, using Apple’s Pages word processor, Numbers spreadsheet or Keynote presentation program) and then sync them or e-mail them to your Mac or PC, and then print from there.
