An analyst from Morgan Stanley noted today that overall netbook sales have decreased ever since the iPad was announced this past January. The decline in notebook sales has been evident for months and continues into September. Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley is using NPD research data that shows falling notebook sales from previous years.
The analyst also mentioned an earlier report from Best Buy CEO that the iPad has chomped its own notebook sales by 50%.
The sluggish economy may also have a role in decreased laptop sales as people aren’t buying new portable computers or replacing old ones just yet. That said, the iPad’s popularity is only hurting sales of other similar devices. With more and more tablets coming to market over the next few months and years, laptops and notebooks have a formidable foe to contend with as each company will do its best to increase their sales.
