More people are browsing the Web via an iPad than on an Android-powered device, according to new monthly browser usage data from one analytics firm.
In just three months on the market, Apple’s iPad has come to represent 0.17 percent of all Web browser traffic tracked by Net Applications. The iPad’s June total managed to exceed Android, which represented 0.14 percent of all Web browsing traffic.
Behind both of them was another iOS-powered device from Apple, the iPod touch. In June, the iPod touch took 0.12 percent of the Web browser share, according to Net Applications.
The iPad has seen a steady climb since it was released in April, notching 0.03 percent in the first month, when it was only available in the U.S. In May, the numbers tripled to 0.09 percent, only to nearly double again in June to the 0.17 percent figure that pushed it past Android.
The numbers, however, do not mean that there are more iPads on the market than Android devices. But the stats do indicate that a far higher percentage of iPad owners use their new device to browse the Web — so many, in fact, that it has now surpassed Android in that department.

I wasn’t the first kid on my block to have an iPad. I was the oldest kid. And it’s not been easy. I’ve had to struggle with admiring onlookers who profess jealousy that I have such a neat toy. And at times, it has been hard to find more than five or six hours of enjoyable daily activities to do on my iPad. But I’ve persevered and while I’ve just scratched the surface, it is clear that the iPad can be an invaluable tool for older users. As the first mass-market tablet computer, it will be followed in short order by competing tablets from many providers, mostly in the PC (as opposed to Apple) world. This will lower prices and increase features.
I do not own Apple stock and am not recommending the company. I am recommending its approach to providing easy access to online information. And I’m recommending that older consumers take a serious look at this tool. You may think the computer age has passed you by but the iPad makes a strong case that what’s passed you by is the high-tech "members only" phase of that age.

If you’re going on a car trip and want to bring your new iPad along for the kids as you ride, you might want to consider putting together a super simple presentation system that fits easily onto any existing seat back or can be slung between the two front seats.
Behold the iBag, which TUAW discussed briefly back in a March post about cheap accessories. A few enhancements will transform your iBag into the perfect iPad presentation system; it’s a veritable iPad car kit!
Here are a few points to keep in mind when creating and using your iBag car kit:
- Duct tape will ensure the integrity of the holes that you punch into the zip bag. You can add those holes with a simple, paper-style hole puncher, by the way.
- Next to duct tape, Velcro is man’s best friend. Use Velcro cable wraps (complete with hooks and eyes) to connect your bag to the headrest or to a between-the-seats hanger.
- Make sure the close tab is up when the bag is closed. This lets you unzip just enough to connect your car sound system to your iPad’s audio jack without losing the extra side support from the bag. (I personally use a jack-to-cassette player adapter.)
- Yes, you can touch the iPad screen through the bag. It’s the magic of capacitive interfaces in action! (And yes, it’s not as great as touching the screen directly.)
- Make sure you rent your movies before you leave home because, as a rule, hotel and motel Wi-Fi service kind of stinks. It took us nearly three hours to rent Pokemon 2000. (That’s not an endorsement of the movie … seriously.)

EA Mobile’s Travis Boatman had a chat with Mobile Entertainment recently, and he says that the iPad is going like gangbusters for the mobile games company. “We’re really pleased with the results so far,” he told ME. “It has a lot of the characteristics of the type of device that plays well with our gameplay.” Boatman said the digital distribution model available in the App Store has helped, but what’s really impressed EA about the iPad is how immersive it is compared to the iPhone.
As compared to the iPhone’s bite-sized experiences while out and about, this is a device where you can actually sit down and play for a while. “It’s more deliberate, and people expect more of a deliberate, immersive experience,” Boatman told the site.

Owners are finding myriad ways to use their iPad to increase their productivity and stay connected via social networks, but there’s no denying that the device is ideal for the consumption of media—movies, news and art.
Yes, art. There are several iPad apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to view art. It’s as passive as standing in front of a painting in a museum, but you can do it from anywhere.
Art Authority for iPad ($9.99) is probably the most comprehensive of these iPad apps. Set up like a virtual museum, you can choose from a variety of galleries—Early through Modern, Contemporary and American. There is also an artist directory that lets you browse through the list of included artists. You do have to be online to use the app, though you will be able to view cached images offline. The $9.99 price tag seems expensive for a reorganization of stuff that can be found on the Internet, but Art Authority does a nice job.
Van Gogh HD, Picasso HD and Klimt HD(each app is 99 cents)each contain huge galleries of each artists’ work, categorized by period. Paintings look stunning on the iPad screen, and you can save them to Photo to be used as wallpapers, or send in an email. With a tap, slideshows will be accompanied by classical music.

Let’s face it. Apple and the legal profession have not always enjoyed a terribly close relationship.
Since the advent of the word processor, being a lawyer practically required a PC. Lawyers’ slavish dedication to Corel’s Word Perfect, long after everybody else had stopped using it, is the stuff of legend. Database management programs were typically proprietary things, all requiring networks of PCs. Using a Mac in this environment required, at best, many workarounds, and, at worst, a separate PC to access various schedulers, run conflict checks and access documents.
Recently, e-filing and the need to share and trade digital documents allowed for greater platform-independence. Macs, iPhones and now iPads claim their share of diehard legal adherents; you can get stories from the front lines of Apple integration in law from sites like The Mac Lawyer, MacAttorney, EsquireMac, the Disability Law Blog and the MacLaw mailing list.
