Time Inc. to Offer Subscriptions to Magazines on IPad by June

By Greg Bensinger

April 9 (Bloomberg) — Time Inc., publisher of Time and People magazines, plans to offer a subscription service for publications sold on Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet computers within three months.

“It’ll probably be June before we’re able to get it up and running for subscriptions,” Ann S. Moore, chairman and chief executive officer of the Time Warner Inc. division, said in an interview yesterday in New York. “The iPad doesn’t allow me to do that right now; it’s only a newsstand.”

The service may compel readers to buy more magazines at a time industrywide print circulation is falling. Time Inc. now charges $4.99 for each digital issue of the weekly Time magazine on iPad, 4 cents more than the print version. Newsweek, published by Washington Post Co., costs $1.99 on the new Apple device.

Citing an anonymous source, MacRumors on Monday reported that iTunes 9.1 will replace the existing "Audiobooks" section in the iTunes Source list with the more broad "Books" category. Users will be able to sort and sync books they purchase through the iBookstore on the iPad when connected to the iTunes desktop client via a USB cable.
