Heavy rains — and a lively grey market — may have dampened the turnout in Beijing
There were plenty of reporters but only about 100 customers queued up outside Apple’s (AAPL) Beijing retail outlet at 8 a.m. Friday when sales of the iPad officially began in China.
The first customer, Han Ziwen, wearing a blue “I BUY IPAD NO 1″ T-shirt, was mobbed by the press as he emerged with a box in each hand. He had been camped out in front of the store for more than two days.
Apple seemed to have plenty of Wi-Fi-only iPads in stock. The company has not yet announced when it will begin selling 3G+Wi-Fi model in China. Both models, however, are available in Beijing’s busy grey market — along with plenty of dodgy knockoffs.

Within a couple weeks of the iPad launch in April 2010 there were already rumors flying around about a new iPad model with a forward facing camera. According to digitimes.com, touch screen suppliers for the iPad are preparing new screens and components for a 2nd generation iPad, available sometime in early 2011.
Considering iPhone 4 and the new iTouch have forward facing cameras to accommodate the FaceTime video conferencing feature, it’s very likely the next iPad model will come with this feature as well.

Aidacase’s iPad case seems like a dream. It’s a full on folio-style iPad case that flips open to reveal an external full-sized physical keyboard. This keyboard connects to the iPad via bluetooth, charges through USB and delivers a whopping 45 hours of battery life. That’s 4.5 times longer than your average daily iPad battery life. As a case, the “keycase” functions like a champ. Simply lock it into place using the magnetic latch and you’re good to go.

Yahoo’s Project Runway event today brought out a major push towards tablets with two new creations. On top of its HTML5 mail, the early search firm will have an HTML5-based home portal optimized for tablets. The page is geared towards the iPad but will give any suitably equipped tablet large, touchscreen-friendly views of highlighted articles as well as usual information like stocks and weather.
Also coming is a native iPad alarm clock app. The title should go beyond its core functions to include a basic calendar, weather, search and other Yahoo-related tasks.

The iPad is making a big dent in the home automation field just like I thought it would mainly because it offers so many more advantages over the traditional remotes found in the space for a fraction of the price. $500 home automation remotes tend look like your Comcast DVR remote and so the iPad is quickly crashing that market. So much so that instead of work against it, most home automation companies developed apps, docks, and entire ecosystems around the iPad. Crestron’s latest accessory, however, address what’s unfortunately viewed as one of the iPad’s key disadvantages when used as a home automation controller: the lack of hard buttons.
