I started watching this video on YouTube and, within seconds, my son was almost magically drawn into my office, staring transfixed at the screen. "This is air hockey?" he asked. "Yes," I replied. "I want it," he said. "It looks fun." My enthusiasm is slightly more tempered, but I think that this is a brilliant choice for an iPad game.
I’m hoping that the game will properly use portrait mode for all uses, regardless of what the video looks like, and that there will be, both, two-player on one device, and the over-the-air Bluetooth support shown on the iTunes description page. For that matter, it would be great to be able to play against a fake opponent, although that is not listed as part of the product description.
According to Bryan Duke of Acceleroto, Air Hockey will sell for $0.99 on the iTunes Store. There’s a free "Gold" version as well.
Sure, David Letterman is rich, famous and apparently no slouch with the ladies… but he’s not an iPad-savvy geek, as you can see here.
During tonight’s Late Show, he brought out an iPad with the top ten list shown ("Top Ten Questions To Ask Yourself Before Waiting In Line For The iPad") — then proceeded to turn the iPad upside down, get frustrated with his inability to wake it from sleep mode, accidentally try to power it down, lick it (!), then he simply went ahead and read from his paper card.
It’s not clear how much of Letterman’s frustration was feigned for comic effect, but it was a bit painful to see guest Sam Worthington place his coffee cup atop the iPad screen a few minutes later.
The iBookstore is now live on the App Store (free) and comes with Winnie the Pooh and the ability to sample of any book in the store before buying. US-only and iPad-only for now, global editions are expected in the near future.
The App Store is live and running with iPad apps right now — you can download and buy any iPad apps you want, even though most of them are technically "embargoed" until tomorrow morning. There’s a lot of amazing stuff out there, but we’ll try to focus you as best we can. Here’s twenty apps that you won’t want to miss in the App Store — even if you don’t buy them for iPad this weekend, you should at least check out the info and screenshots that are now available.
The iPad doesn’t go on sale until Saturday, but the line has already started in front of Apple’s flagship store in New York City. Okay, there’s only one guy in line so far, Greg, but if you want to pick up your pre-ordered iPad you are going to have to get behind him. Unless you go to another store. Or just wait for it to be delivered to your house.
Anyway, this guy is determined to sit in front of the Apple store for two days and nights. The video below was sent to us by Zoltan Kaprinay, a Hungarian tourist who came to New York to pick up his own iPad on Saturday. He was scoping out the Apple store and captured the footage below.
Nobody expects iPhone-long lines for this launch, but for the Mac faithful there’s always a badge of honor that comes with being first.
Earlier today, we asked you (via Twitter and @ask_tuaw) for your top inquiries about the product everyone’s talking about. While we can’t give you first-person photos and video — yet — we can give you an answer, straight from the lab and the lap, to the most popular question: Can you read iBooks in direct sunlight?
The answer, surprisingly enough: Yes, you can. Even in bright sun, the high-contrast black type on a white page background was clearly legible, says our experimenter. In fact, the display looks quite a bit like the Kindle’s e-ink screen under those lighting conditions.
