The Apple iPad has been available 4 months now with sales doing better than most initially thought. Almost 10 million iPads are expected to be sold in 2010 alone, with projected sales in 2011 reaching 18-25 million. It’s no surprise. Well, maybe to all of the naysayers who thought the iPad wouldn’t take off to the degree that it has. But to most others, the iPad’s potential is becoming more obvious as its popularity gains traction.

iPad’s dominance over the tablet computer market in the future seems probable, at least until a viable competitor comes along. We’ve heard frequent droning from other companies about the next “iPad Killer”. The HP Slate hasn’t taken off yet. With an earlier reported release date by the end this year, it looks like the HP Slate won’t be killing anything anytime soon. The Samsung Galaxy tablet is expected to be released before October. There are several other tablets waiting for their turn in the limelight as well. I wish them all good luck, they’re going to need it.

Last night, Flipboard announced the launch of their iPad app, a social magazine called Flipboard.

Designed from the ground up for iPad, Flipboard creates a magazine out of a user’s social content. Simply launch Flipboard and “flip” open the cover to get started. From the Table of Contents readers can view their sections and personalize the magazine.

The content of Flipboard is populated based on the user’s own accounts on Twitter and Facebook, as well as their other interests. It’s also presented in a very iPad-friendly interface as shown in this promo video:

Stockbriefings.com is reporting that Walmart Senior VP Gary Severson anticipates the giant retailer to be selling the iPad by year’s end. Considering there’s probably a Walmart within a 5 mile square radius of every American, that would mean a wider audience of potential iPad owners and users. Not wanting to be late to the game of selling savvy tech devices, Walmart is trying to compete with other tech retailers like Best Buy.

On Friday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) stocks closed at 49.43.

30 Must Have Games for the iPhone and iPod touch. That garnered your attention and plenty of comments, so we’re happy to present its natural sequel, 15 Must Have Games for the iPad.

As with the first feature, let us underscore that we do not consider this to be a list of the best games for the iPad, or superlative games in any specific category. Instead, this is a collection of games vetted by The Loop as being fun to play and standouts for one reason or another. So please don’t take umbrage if you don’t see your favorite game listed. But by all means use the comment section below to share with other readers your thoughts on this list and any other iPad games you think are excellent.

Flight Control HD

Firemint wasted no time, hitting launch day for the iPad with a release of Flight Control HD, an updated version of its eminently popular iPhone air traffic control game. You rack up points by safely landing a variety of airplanes and helicopters onto their runways and landing pads. If any of them collide, the game is over. Firemint did more than just scale up the graphics to work on the iPad, however – Flight Control HD also adds new maps and a fun, quirky “3D” mode that provides the illusion of depth if you wear a pair of red/blue “anaglyph” glasses (not included, of course, but available in online, novelty shops and elsewhere).

Warpgate HD

Freeverse had been working on its ambitious action/RPG game Warpgate initially as an iPhone game, but the iPad caused them to pause the iPhone version and rework it initially as an iPad release. Envisioned as a touch-based variant on Elite or as a latter-day Escape Velocity for you Mac game enthusiasts, Warpgate puts you in the pilot’s chair of an interstellar spacecraft as you seek your fortune. You can deliver cargo, become a pirate, participate in missions that move a storyline along and more. The game’s graphics are exquisite, its scale is immense – three dozen star systems, each chock-full of planets and space stations to interact with, tons of different starships to control and lots more.

Top 10 iPad Apps for the SummerSummer is here and thoughts are turning to vacations, traveling and leisure activities. It’s a time for heading to the beach or across the globe to experience new places. Some folks may be staying close to home this year and looking for new things to do nearby. Or perhaps a virtual vacation is in the cards, using the power of the web to experience exotic places from a distance. The iPad is an apt companion for all of these summer activities, if the right apps come along for the journey.

Kayak. Traveling means booking flights, and in this economy finding the best deal is a must. Kayak is a good way to search for flights that meet specific criteria and book them. The app also handles hotels, so you can plan your travel and accommodations in one place. Free.

Zagat to Go. One of the great joys of vacations is sampling local delicacies and trying new food. It can be a challenge to find good places to eat in an unfamiliar place and that’s where Zagat comes to the rescue. You can search for restaurants, get pricing information, book reservations and find directions using the iPad’s GPS. $9.99.

Free Translator. If you are lucky enough to be traveling to exotic locales this summer, you may be confronted with a language you don’t speak. This app is a simple way to translate phrases in a number of languages to help you get around in foreign places. It is an iPhone app but works well on the iPad. Free.

Urbanspoon. This app is great for finding specific types of restaurants nearby, using a great system of criteria to narrow down the search. You can find what you crave with just a few taps on the iPad screen, complete with a map to see where you need to go. It covers many cities in the U.S. for those staying close to home, and also major cities in the UK and Australia. Free.
