7-Inch iPad Design a Done Deal?AppleInsider.com is citing a rumor from a Chinese production plant that Apple has created a new 7-inch iPad, supposedly that is more like the iPhone 4.

From the report:

“Yes there will be a (7-inch) tablet, yes it’s well underway in terms of product development and in fact it’s a finished product,”

“Yes 5 plus different designs have been floating around to help Apple protect itself from people discovering its next product look and feel but… the final design will in fact bear more resemblance to the iPhone 4 stylings than the original iPad design.”

Rumors of the new, smaller “mini” iPad have been floating around for awhile now. The smaller iPad version may be a move by Apple to compete with other ereader type devices such as the Kindle. A lower price than its bigger brother would certainly make it more appealing to consumers.

ABC’s new TV show My Generation debuted tonight and teamed up with Nielsen to provide a live social interactive experiment via a first-of-its-kind app on the iPad which seems to have been a success.

As soon as the program began on the television, one click on the iPad app synced the two together, followed by a confirmation. As the show began to highlight the participants of the faux-documentary, the first poll appeared in the iPad app: “What were you like in high school?” Options ranged from the Rock Star, The Jock, The Wallflower, The Punk and others. Shortly after, the results were shown with “The Nerd” winning out with 22%.

Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions on iPad Sooner Than Later? As noted last week, Apple is looking to fix the problem of offering print media on its devices. Now they’re making a push to get a new digital “iNewsstand” up and running sooner rather than later, says a report from the Wall Street Journal. But the release of the new media subscription service may be on hold until the next generation iPad becomes available by the end of the 1st quarter in 2011. The standalone application would be similar to Apple’s iBook store.

Apple has been a successful middle man with it’s iTunes Store in offering music, movies, TV shows and books. Now they’re trying their best to offer a similar service with newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Apple has had some past problems in negotiating deals with some media content providers in terms of offering single issues or monthly plans for sale as opposed to full subscriptions.

At present, Apple typically doesn’t sell subscriptions, instead offering monthly iPad editions of Wired magazine for $3.99 each, or a daily edition of Gannett Co.’s USA Today free. Subscriptions, however, are a much more important business for U.S. publishers, representing seven of every 10 newspapers and magazines sold. Publishers also mine subscriber rolls for names, email addresses, credit-card numbers and other information to help them attract advertisers and target new offers to readers.

Apple Planning Newspaper Subscription Plan For iPadWithin as little as a few months Apple may begin to provide newspaper subscriptions on the iPad through a new digital newsstand service similar to the iBookstore, according to MacRumors.com. Bloomberg is also offering some insight into this highly anticipated subscription service that may turn a corner for magazines and newspapers hoping for a digital revival of their industry:

Apple Inc. is developing a digital newsstand for publishers that would let them sell magazines and newspapers to consumers for use on Apple devices, said two people familiar with the matter.

The newsstand, designed particularly for the iPad, would be similar to Apple’s iBook store for electronic books, said the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are private. The newsstand would be separate from Apple’s App Store, where people can buy some publications now, they said.

The parties involved are still haggling over the particulars such as pricing and revenue sharing, so it’s not a done deal just yet. But Apple is also offering developing tools to support news content and server technology to help newspapers get ready for the new “iNewsstand”.

Best Buy Says Netbook/Notebook Decline in Sales Report Was ExaggeratedA statement just released by Best Buy indicates an earlier report in the Wall Street Journal, with a quote from Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn about declining netbook/notebook sales, was “grossly exaggerated”.

From the statement:

“The reports of the demise of these devices are grossly exaggerated,” Dunn said. “While they were fueled in part by a comment in the Wall Street Journal that was attributed to me, they are not an accurate depiction of what we’re currently seeing. In fact, we see some shifts in consumption patterns, with tablet sales being an incremental opportunity. And as we said during our recent earnings call, we believe computers will remain a very popular gift this holiday because of the very distinct and desirable benefits they offer consumers. That’s why we intend to carry a broad selection of computing products and accessories to address the demand we anticipate this season.”
