High-quality unboxing photos of Apple's new iPadAs is expected with any Apple product, the box is simple and elegant. The packaging assures that the iPad is the center attraction — when you pull the lid off, it’s all iPad.

Removing the iPad reveals the manual underneath, and lifting that out gives access to the USB cable and wall charger. Setup is quick, easy and simple. The iPad needs to be activated through iTunes, a very fast process that allows you to sync photos, videos, music and existing iPhone/iPod touch applications you might already have on your desktop.

The all aluminum back of the Wi-Fi model looks great (I always preferred that look), but if the first-gen iPhone is any indication, you’ll probably want a case for this investment before it gets scratched up. Upon booting the App Store, users are immediately asked if they want to download the iBooks application. It installs quickly over Wi-Fi and works well with a clean interface and very responsive touch controls.

Probably the best thing for a touch typist like myself: compatibility with any Bluetooth keyboard. I could totally see myself getting some work done with this thing, now that I can actually type fast and accurately. The soft keyboard works well enough, but because you can’t rest your fingers on the screen, you’re forced to sort of hunt and peck. Maybe this will improve over time.

The lines are up, the barricades are ready, and we’re just a couple of hours away from the first cash transaction that will end with someone walking out the door with an iPad. That’s just too long to wait, however, to give you this unboxing and introductory walkthrough — we were fortunate enough to sit down with a demo unit and we’ve got several videos for your viewing pleasure.

Video number one appears above, and the other videos appear in the posts linked below. We are deeply appreciative of the opportunity to get our grubby palms on the iPad early enough to get these clips to you now. They may not have the smooth production values of Apple’s walkthroughs, but they were made with love.

Letterman's iPad top ten list doesn't go quite according to planSure, David Letterman is rich, famous and apparently no slouch with the ladies… but he’s not an iPad-savvy geek, as you can see here.

During tonight’s Late Show, he brought out an iPad with the top ten list shown ("Top Ten Questions To Ask Yourself Before Waiting In Line For The iPad") — then proceeded to turn the iPad upside down, get frustrated with his inability to wake it from sleep mode, accidentally try to power it down, lick it (!), then he simply went ahead and read from his paper card.

It’s not clear how much of Letterman’s frustration was feigned for comic effect, but it was a bit painful to see guest Sam Worthington place his coffee cup atop the iPad screen a few minutes later.

iPad Reviews: 5 Things We've LearnedReviews of Apple’s iPad are rolling in, and boy, are they predictable. Pretty much everyone adores Apple’s shiny new tablet. When they aren’t heaping praise on its sleek design, brilliant screen, and awesome new apps, they’re either hitting all the specs we’ve known about since January or casually mentioning the iPad’s weaknesses: no camera, no Flash, no USB.

Buried among these reviews, at least, are a few tidbits of new information for people who’ve been reading petabytes of iPad blog posts and articles written by people who haven’t used the device (myself included).

So here are five things we’ve learned about the iPad from the latest reviews, just before its April 3 launch:

Video Review: Apple iPad, an In-Depth LookNow that the iPad is here in the PCMag Labs, I thought it would be useful if we showed you—in video—just what this thing can do. Back in January, we were able to shoot some footage at the iPad announcement, in San Francisco but the setting was not ideal to do a full tour of the tablet. Having spent some quality time with the device, which we awarded a PCMag Editors’ Choice in the emerging tablet category, I wanted to show off the iPad’s best features—some of which were not obvious at first, like the iWork Pages app’s seamless integration with the Mail app, and its ability to play nice with Microsoft Word documents.

Andy Ihnatko: iPad is pure innovation, one of best computers everUncle Walt has weighed in, and most of the other big tech pundits are starting to weigh in on the Apple iPad. The Chicago Sun Times columnist and Mac geek extraordinaire Andy Ihnatko has offered his input, not only in the first of what he says will be many posts about the device, but also in an interview on Leo Laporte’s TWiT Live MacBreak Weekly.

The headline says it all — Ihnatko says that the iPad is one of the best computers ever. He starts his review by saying that the iPad meets or exceeds all of the hype that preceded the release, and then goes on to mention that "it’s a computer that many people have wanted for years."

As in Walt Mossberg’s review, Andy comments that it can easily last 10 hours on a charge, it can hold just about any piece of media you ever want to carry with you, and that it does the "dull compulsories of computing (Mail, the web, and Microsoft Office-style apps) so well" that the iPad will, in many cases, take the place of a standard laptop computer.

Ihnatko, who has had the pleasure of playing with an iPad for the last week, gushes about Apple’s innovation, saying "I’m suddenly wondering if any other company is as committed to invention as Apple. Has any other company ever demonstrated a restlessness to stray from the safe and proven, and actually invent things?"

The result? As he says, "The iPad user experience is instantly compelling and elegant… It’s a computer that’s designed for speed, mobility, and tactile interaction above all other considerations."
