Up from 10% four months ago, according to a new survey
How’s Steve Jobs’ campaign against Adobe (ADBE) Flash progressing? The bar chart at right offers one measure.
It comes from Mefeedia, a media search website that indexes video from a wide variety of sources — from CBS and ABC to YouTube and Hulu, some 30,000 sources in all.
From time to time Mefeedia analyzes its index to look for trends. One of the trends it’s tracking is how much of the video on the Web is encoded only in Flash and how much in H.264 and HTML5, the standards Apple (AAPL) is championing as alternatives.

Recently, TUAW has looked at using the iPad’s camera connection kit to attach and use USB drives. If you’re using a jailbroken iPad, you’ll be pleased to discover that the camera connection kit allows you to connect a USB stick or hard drive and access it from your iPad. That means you can easily bring extra files on-the-go and copy them into third party (i.e. no, you’re not going to update your iTunes library on the go…yet) applications.
Mounting drives is the province of a built-in application called MobileStorageMounter. It’s part of the iPad’s core services. When it sees a new FAT or HFS USB device, it attempts to mount that device using standard Unix services. If it finds a built-in DCIM folder on the drive, it launches the iPad Photos application. If not, it throws up the dialog shown at the top of this post, reporting that the attached USB device is not supported.
As far as you’re concerned, that error message is good news. It means that the device has been properly mounted and is ready for use. If you do not see the dialog, it’s time to take one of two courses of action: a quick fix that works most of the time and a thorough fix that always works.

Apple recently updated a support document detailing current solutions to Wi-Fi connectivity issues surrounding the iPad. There have been several distinct Wi-Fi issues reported on various discussion forums. The new support document lists a few possible workarounds, but also states that “Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.”
The workarounds listed include:
– Updating Wi-Fi router firmware
– Using WPA or WPA2 wireless security
– Adjusting screen brightness
– Renewing IP address

Despite Apple’s claims that the iPad would ship unlocked, allowing owners of the 3G model to access any compatible wireless data network they might choose, the device is locked to carrier Softbank Mobile in Japan.
Apple confirmed on Monday to IDG News Service that the iPad will ship locked in Japan. That’s a change from January, when the iPad was first unveiled and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said that the device would be unlocked internationally, allowing customers to choose their carrier.
"All Japanese models will be SIM-locked to Softbank Mobile, Apple’s iPhone partner in Japan, Apple said late Monday," the report said. "The company confirmed the presence of a SIM lock but couldn’t immediately explain why it was enforcing the restriction in Japan."

Since Steve Jobs has taken it upon himself to answer customer queries, he becomes a frequently cited source for what Apple is working on. According to one reader, Steve Jobs replied to an email asking why there are no printing capabilities on the iPad. Steve Jobs reportedly replied “It will come.”

Developers familiar with the iPhone 4.0 beta report that the new firmware brings spellcheck and suggested word replacement features from the iPad to the iPhone and iPod touch.
The new features first premiered on the iPhone OS 3.2 used exclusively by iPad, but when iPhone OS 4 hits this summer, it will extend the new features across Apple’s range of mobile devices.
The spelling system extends the mechanism Apple created for copy and paste operations, enabling users to touch a misspelled word to select it, and then touch “Replace…” as an alternative to cut or copy operations.
The system then offers replacement word suggestions in blue type, allowing for one touch correction. Misspelled text is underlined in red, a convention from Mac OS X’s system wide spell check that was originally taken from Microsoft Word.
