Goldman Sachs: iPad Will Dominate for Years

It’s been just over a year since the first iPad tablet was launched. Now with the iPad 2 launch last month that saw even more hype and more demand than its predecessor, Apple’s tablet is a powerhouse to be reckoned with. Sales have gone through the roof and continue to climb as high demand is prevalent across the country. Analysts at Goldman Sachs are now saying what is becoming obvious, Apple and the iPad will dominate the tablet market for the next two years at least.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab and Motorola Xoom tablets are decent products, but have arrived too late to the game. They are worthy competitors, but to what degree? Goldman Sachs thinks they lack the luster overall to meet or exceed the iPad’s popularity in the coming years.

Goldman Sachs: iPad Will Dominate for Years 2

Researches at the firm expect Apple to claim at least 54 percent of the tablet market share in 2011 and 2012. If tablet competitors’ sales fall below their expectations, Apple may enjoy up to 74 percent of the tablet market share in 2011, and 71 percent in 2012. Goldman is leaning towards the latter figures with Apple holding onto more than 70 percent of the tablet market in the next two years.

“If we include tablets in our PC unit forecast, then our estimates suggest Apple’s combined iPad and Mac market share would reach 12 percent in 2011. This represents an incremental $8.7 billion in iPad gross profits for Apple, or more than the $6.0 billion in profits we expect the company to generate from the Mac business. Based on the current market share breakdown in the PC market, this could presumably make Apple one of the largest vendors in the combined PC and tablet market.”

Another Touchscreen Supplier Added to iPad 2 Production

In an attempt to meet continued demand for iPad 2, Apple has added another touchscreen manufacturer to its list of component suppliers. Chimei Innolux Corp. will be the third touchscreen producer to supply iPad 2 touchscreens for Apple. TPK Holding Corp. and Wintek Corp. are the other two.

This new partnership means Apple is solidifying the relationship with its overseas manufacturing partner Foxconn Technology Group as Chimei Innolux Corp. is an affiliate of Foxconn.

Chimei is providing screens as well as touch sensors for iPad 2 and expects to start shipping components next month, according to DigiTimes.

OtterBox iPad Cases Are Here!

This announcement of Apple’s latest partnership comes on the heels of news about Apple testing LED backlights from a new source, Everlight Electronics.

2011 is expected to be a huge success for iPad 2 with shipments possibly reaching up to 45 million. Evidence of that can already be seen as high demand for the new tablet has been non-stop since its launch on March 11. Retail chains selling iPad 2 continue to have trouble keeping it in stock. ATT.com will ship the device within 10-15 business days and Apple.com will ship it within 2-3 weeks if purchasing online.

Apple Seeking Additonal LED Backlight Manufacturer

With the popularity of iPad 2 on par with that of Cabbage Patch dolls from the 80’s, Apple is looking to add another LED backlight maker to its list of manufacturers used to produce parts for the new tablet. High demand has resulted in limited stock available for purchase at stores across the world, and also long waiting periods to have iPad 2 shipped to you if you buy it online.

Sample of LED backlight products from Everlight Electronics have been delivered to Apple and are currently being tested. Should Apple decide to use another iPad 2 component producer, it’s likely they will meet estimated shipping amounts of 45 million units in 2011.

Everlight Electronics is a relatively large company with 6,400 employees based in Taiwan and offers its LED backlights to other tablet makers.

Best Buy Holding Onto iPad 2 Stock Part of Promotion, No Beef with Apple

Last week we reported about a rumored dispute between Apple and Best Buy over the retail chain’s supposed policy to hold onto its iPad 2 stock after daily sales quotas were met for each day. It turns out there was no love lost between Apple and Best Buy at all. But Best Best is holding on to some of its iPad 2 inventory as part of an upcoming promotion, which there are no details for as of this time.

BGR received a message from Best Buy detailing the situation.

“Best Buy continues to receive iPad 2 inventory from Apple on a regular basis. As we’ve said previously, we are fulfilling customer reservations first. Our stores have been asked to temporarily hold non-reserved iPad 2 inventory for an upcoming promotion. This is a customary practice for us when there are supply constraints. Best Buy enjoys a great partnership with Apple, and we’re delighted by customer response to iPad 2.”

Rumor of Best Buy Holding Back Its iPad 2 Stock Seems to Be FalseCrunchGear posted a rumor yesterday about a Best Buy iPad 2 sales policy that had the retail chain telling customers their iPad 2 stocks were sold out. The truth, the rumor suggested, was they some Best Buy stores did in fact have iPad 2s available but were holding them back because they had already met their iPad 2 sales quota for the day.

A reader who works at Best Buy just told us that there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding between the electronics retailer and Apple. Apparently, Best Buy was holding off on selling the iPad 2s it had in stock, telling customers there weren’t any when in fact they had just reached their quota of sales for the day.

This supposedly sent Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, into a tizzy and he was reported to be helping with negotiations to resolve the matter.

TUAW also received a tip that iPad 2 sales were ordered by Apple to be put on hold at Best Buy.

But it seems this rumor may haven been proven to be untrue. The original tipster that gave details to CrunchGear received this email from Tim Cook:

SL,

My understanding is most of their stores sold all of their initial supply on the first night of the launch and the balance were out by the following day. I am not aware of any units being held.

Tim

From Tim Cook’s own words, he is not aware of Best Buy holding back any iPad 2s.

Apple Now Shipping iPad 2 in 2-3 Weeks

Potential iPad 2 purchasers will be happy to know Apple has updated their waiting period for shipment to 2-3 weeks, improved from the previous 3-4 week waiting period. The shipping waiting period on apple.com had been as high as 5 weeks for some people soon after the US launch on March 11,2011.

Apple released its first iPad 2 commercial a few days ago and appears to be catching up with high demand for the device. They probably wouldn’t have put out a commercial unless they were sure production output was increasing and able to meet current and future demand.
