Nobody ever claimed that the iPad was weatherproof, but that didn’t stop news anchor Chuck Scarborough from taking his tablet out to the seashore. Reader Michael Neumann saw the veteran NYC broadcaster using his iPad to show weather radar during Hurricane Earl’s race up the US east coast. He could have saved money on that case, though.
It’s time again to check out these free iPad app deals. These iPad apps once cost money to purchase, but now they’re free for the taking! Please note that some apps may only be free for a short time.
Apple has doubled its monthly output capacity of the iPad and is now manufacturing 2 million per month to meet strong consumer demand, but the company reportedly would like to go even further and produce 3 million every month very soon.
Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley indicated that iPad builds recently increased to 2 million per month, up from the previous number of just 1 million a month. Apple allegedly indicated to its suppliers that it would like to produce 3 million a month starting in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010.
It’s likely not coincidental that less than a week ago, iPad shipping times for new orders from apple.com improved to 24 hours. For months, customers had to wait an estimated 7 to 10 days, as Apple was surprised by strong demand for the device when it launched in April.
Tonight Twitter released a new update to their popular Twitter application that makes it a Universal app with native support for the iPad’s large display. While native support has been a long requested feature for the official Twitter app, the company has also implemented a number of new interface features that seem quite natural on the iPad’s large screen.
The most obvious feature is the use of movable Panes that allow you to actively manipulate content around the screen. Panes can be swiped left/right to move to cover or expose other panes and works surprisingly well.
The new Apple TV will be available later this month (you can pre-order it now) for $99.99. While most of the changes to the device were expected, not everything that was predicted was announced.
For instance, although the new device sports an A4 processor like the iPhone 4 and iPad, it isn’t being classified as an “iOS” device. Presumably at its core, the new Apple TV is running iOS, or at least something very similar to iOS, but the App Store is not coming to the television, at least not directly.
Because content is not stored on the device, instead streamed from a computer or from an Internetservice, Apple has introduced a new rental pricing plan. TV show rentals are just $0.99 for HD and first-run movies are $4.99 for HD. These prices are very competitive, especially in the HD space.
One complaint about the iPad in the lead-up to its launch was that it wasn’t a phone. This is arguably a little like complaining that a fridge is not a toaster. But it’s okay. It turns out the iPadis a phone after all.
Well, sort of. Read on.
Two different approaches
Early on, someone at Apple leaked the little secret or some smart cookie figured out and reported that it was actually possible to turn the iPad into a VoIP phone, by plugging in a USB headset using the optional Camera Connection kit.
The Camera Connection kit, a $29 accessory, includes two adapters that plug into the iPad’s lone connectivity port. One is a smart card reader, the other has a USB port. You plug in the USB adapter, then plug a headset into it.
We discovered that in fact you don’t need adapter or headset. With the right software—such as Skype or Toktumi’s Line2 for iPhone—the iPad’s built-in microphone and speakers turn it into a workable, if not great, speaker phone.
