Screenwriting: iPad App ReviewThis script-crafting app doesn’t rewrite the genre, but still delivers a blockbuster.

If you’re anything like me, in your spare time you’re writing your spec script for a project Jessica Alba will simply flip for (its about a dancer who becomes a better dancer). While apps like Awesome Note or PlainText are great for cribbing and sorting character bios on the go, when you’re used to hammering out dialogue in Final Draft you find typical document-writing apps only slow the flow of your creative juices. The revolutionary idea behind Final Draft is that it does all the annoying formatting on your behalf, so you can focus on dealing with the plot holes in your second act. The brilliance of Screenwriting is that it essentially does the same thing. While it may not be exactly like toting around $300 worth of script-crafting software on your iPad, Screenwriting is an inexpensive alternative to doing all that laborious formatting yourself. And it’s a breeze to use.

Screenwriting: iPad App Review 2

Starting a new script about cops who hunt vampires in their spare time? Awesome. From the home page, click ‘add project,’ enter in the title (Stake Out, natch), your contact info, even your WGA number, and Screenwriter designs your cover page before you can write ‘Fade In.’ The next step is adding a bank of characters and descriptions (Bruce: 35, single, no nonsense, hates vampires, loves Sangria), which you can edit at any time (loves Bourbon) and from which you’ll draw names while writing dialogue so you won’t have to type ‘Carlito’ 43 times in your first scene.

The other aspects of the app are pretty intuitive. There’s a basic ‘change style’ functionality that allows you to change the formatting on your lines with a few taps of the finger. This is something the app developers should have taken advantage of in the sample script they included, Mirror Self Image, as in the first scene there are some embarrassing/unintentionally hilarious formatting mistakes (ex: Katie: When will Sarah be back? Helen picks up her utensil and continues to eat. She dodges Katie’s stare.) A mistake like that is easily fixed in your own script, but one would think the signature script being sold with the App as an example of what the App itself is capable of would be edited and presented without any flaws.

Apple Now Allowing Subscriptions for iPad Publications

iPad publishers are now able to sell full subscriptions to their publications within apps, something Apple has rarely allowed in the past. Previously, publishers were limited to selling only single issues of their digital magazine and newspapers. The Daily iPad newspaper does allow for yearly/long term subscriptions, but their free trial period has not expired yet as the app is so new.

But there is concern on how much subscriber information may given to publishers, who want as much as they can get, presumably for better ad targeting and content choices.

From a statement by Apple:

AT&T Slashes iPad Accessory Prices By 50% As iPad 2 Launch Nears

It’s coming! Can you feel it? AT&T can, and they’re cutting their iPad accessory prices by 50%. The mobile phone company sells iPad and iPad accessories in its stores but needs to make room for the new iPad 2. The new iPad has some different features that won’t allow it to be used properly with some current iPad accessories like cases and covers.

The next generation iPad should have a forward facing camera to use with FaceTime, Apple’s new video chat feature which is now used on the iPhone 4. There will also be at least one new port added, possibly for and SD card, USB, or display purposes.

Slashing accessory prices in February may mean the iPad 2 should be launched relatively soon, by the end of March or early April.

iPad Gaining Acceptance in Business World

Ben Reitzes, a Barclays’ analyst, said this past Friday that the iPad is “running far ahead of its tablet competition and its their game to lose,” in regards to business. His report, based partly on a conference call with a Forrester Research analyst, suggests Apple is ripe to become a leader with tablet inclusion in the corporate world.

Mr. Reitzes is predicting 47 million tablets to be sold in 2001 and believes Apple will command a 70% market share with the continuing success of the iPad. His price target for Apple stock is $450 per share.

iPad May Be Getting LCD and PLS Displays From Samsung

And article in the Korean Times suggest Apple may choose an LCD display from Samsung for the iPad 2.

According to sources, the company, established in January 2009, is in the final stage of talks on supplying its latest LCD panels for Apple’s iPad 2, which is expected to be released later this year.

But the article went on to say a spokesman for Samsung and representative from Apple Korea had no comments on the rumors of the new display types.

Also mentioned in the article was the possible use of Samsung’s Super Plane to Line Switching (PLS) technology being used in future iPad versions, a new type of display that was recently made public late last year.

Your iPad BatteryThe battery in your iPad is costly to replace(Apple actually ships you a new iPad), therefore it’s best to know how to take care of it and get the most use from it. The iPad contains a 25-watt lithium-polymer battery able to last about 10 hours with sustained use.

Apple supplies all iPads with a 10-watt USB charger adapter. For the fastest charging method, one must plug the adapter into a wall socket. You may also charge the iPad by connecting to a USB port in a computer, but this method only provides 5-watts of charging power and the iPad must be in sleep mode or turned off. If you try to charge the iPad while it is turned on through a computer, you’ll see a “not charging” notice next to the battery icon.

Keep your iPad out of the sunlight for prolong periods and away from heat sources as these may damage the battery and result in a shorter lifespan. If the iPad gets too hot, there will be a warning message given and it will automatically turn off. You can put your device in the refrigerator to cool it down and bring it back to life should it overheat.
