If you’ve ever used your iPad in the kitchen, you know that the magical and revolutionary device doesn’t always match up to the greasy, sticky, steamy reality of the cooking zone. We’ve proposed a few low-tech solutions to this challenge before, but when we heard about the Kitchen iPad Rack (US$29.95), I was curious to see whether it would make the kitchen a more tablet-friendly environment.
Of course, the first challenge was getting the idea past our home’s chief operations officer. "You’re putting holes in my kitchen cabinets?" she asked, eyebrows raised. "I don’t think that’s a good idea." Once I explained that the mounting hardware goes completely underneath the cabinet and is out of sight, she relented — with a good deal of remaining skepticism.

According to The Telegraph, peers in the British House of Lords will soon be able to use iPads and other mobile internet devices during debates. Under previous rules, members of the House of Lords weren’t allowed to use any electronic devices, a restriction the Lords Administration and Works Committee said was "incomplete, outdated and contradictory."
For a trial period of one year, Lords will be able to use iPads, iPhones and other smartphones and e-readers "to access Parliamentary papers and other documents which are clearly and closely relevant to the business before the House," according to a report issued by the Lords Administration and Works Committee.

iLounge reports that it has received a handful of details about what may be in store for the second-generation iPad. According to the report, the information comes from a source that has proven reliable in the past but that has cautioned that this information is preliminary and thus some caution should be exercised.
First, the source indicates that Apple is indeed building near field communications (NFC) capabilities into the next-generation iPad and that the company is working to develop accessories that can interface with the NFC/RFID chips included in the device.
In the most basic implementation, an accessory could announce its presence and potential functions to an iPad or iPhone without the need for a Bluetooth or similar connection; our source suggests that an otherwise simple case could include a radio chip so that an inserted iPhone or iPad could go into power-saving hibernation mode automatically. More complex accessories will go far beyond that.
Second, Apple may be shifting from the current aluminum shell for the iPad to one made of carbon fiber in order to reduce the weight of the device. While carbon fiber iPad shells have reportedly been spotted, it is unclear whether they will make their way into final production models.

I admit that I’m not the biggest football fan, but I do watch the Super Bowl every year — mostly for the commercials. If only there was an app that compiled all the best Super Bowl ads of the last few years for you to watch on your iPad. Of course, there’s an app for that! Vualla, a company who makes a social TV iPad app, has created a new app geared specifically towards Super Bowl XLV — and the commercials are just a fraction of what this app has to offer. Oh, and did we mention it’s free?

CNET is reporting that the NFL is considering replacing bulky coach’s play books with iPads. For now, the Dallas Cowboys and "a couple" other teams are mulling over the switch, would could save them "…up to 5,000 pages of paper printouts per game."
Besides the cost (and environmental) benefits of eliminating all that paper, a networked iPad would give coaches and players access to data in whole new ways. Imagine scrolling through clearly-presented plays, some complete with animation. Or real-time communication with coordinators in the booth. Plus, all of those photos of the field that are printed on the sideline could be pushed to an iPad seconds after the play was complete, in full color. Heck, push video.
Also, a lost iPad could be remotely wiped. The same can’t be said for a lost play book.
Another added benefit: they’ll just look cool with a big logo Gelaskin on the back.

The majority of Apple’s second-generation iPad models now being built will include either GSM/UMTS or CDMA 3G support, according to checks overseas manufacturers, suggesting the company plans on forging stronger relationships with wireless carriers alongside the device’s introduction.
After briefing AppleInsider exclusively last month on the components expected to find their way into the new iPads, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities has provide additional details on the five million unit supply Apple is reportedly amassing prior to its launch in the coming months.
Just in time for the Super Bowl!
As previously reported, Apple is expected to offer its second-gen iPad in three versions: a WiFi only model, a GSM/UMTS version for AT&T and most other carriers globally, and a CDMA/EVDO model for Verizon (and possibly other CDMA carriers in the future). The naming convention for these three models is said to be K93, K94 and K95, respectively. For comparison, the Verizon iPhone 4 shipping this month is codenamed N92.
In speaking to AppleInsider, Kuo said his checks in the Far East indicate production figures of 38 percent for the K93 WiFi model, 46 percent of the K46 3G model, and 16 percent for the Verizon-compatible K95 CDMA version. This indicates that Apple apparently expects most iPad 2 users will opt for 3G models, even on Verizon where new iPhone buyers have the option to pay $20 for hotspot service through their new smartphone.
