News Corporation on Wednesday released The Daily, its new digital newspaper with a full staff of reporters covering worldwide news that, for now, is exclusive to the iPad, and free to try for two weeks. AppleInsider offers a first look at the publication that hopes to become the future of newspapers.

Before downloading The Daily, users must agree to the updated iTunes terms and conditions, which note that the application may request permission to provide personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. Users can, however, choose to opt out of this.

The ability to share personal information of subscribers with advertisers was said to be a major sticking point between Apple and publishers, as the two sides attempted to broker a deal for in-application subscriptions. For now, the details of Apple’s in-app subscriptions remain unknown, as The Daily is the only to offer the service.

Apple’s head of iTunes, Eddy Cue, said on Wednesday that Apple would reveal more information about in-app subscriptions, and make the feature available to other content providers and application makers, in the near future.

When launching The Daily, downloading a new issue requires users to launch the application. It is not automatically delivered through background downloading, as was previously rumored.

Upon launching the application, users are met with an initial loading screen: "A new issue of The Daily. is being delivered." On first launch, the application asks for the ability to access the user’s current location and the ability to send push notifications. Nothing is asked about sharing personal information with advertisers.

join.me introduces mobile viewer for iPad

Today, join.me introduced their free iOS viewer, allowing users to participate in online meetings and screen sharing from their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. A bunch of us TUAWians spent time yesterday afternoon exploring join.me in its browser-based form. join.me is a new conferencing/screen-sharing website from the makers of LogMeIn, a popular remote screen solution.

What makes join.me so compelling for us is that it takes about 5 seconds to set up, and doesn’t require registration for casual use. If you need more, it costs $29/month or $299/year for pro-level support.

With join.me, you don’t have to plan out a conference. When you decide that you need to meet, the tools are all there and ready for you. Just send around the connection URL and you’re good to go. We were able to move our normal back-channel discussions from IRC to join.me in just a couple of minutes, including the step where it downloaded a small app to our Macs.

We found join.me to be loaded with all the typical bells and whistles you expect from a GoToMeeting-style solution including text and phone chat for participants (there’s a call in number, you just enter your meeting ID, which is generated the moment you decide to start your meeting — so there’s really no planning involved), screen control sharing, and more. All of this was done with a better-than-expected GUI, with clean interface controls and an appealing layout.

The responsiveness was fantastic, even during normal business hours, when you expect loads to be higher. The TUAW participants were able to watch Megan’s video cam in real time from our computers, which were located across the country from her. You can easily imagine using that kind of feature for doing live presentations although we were, actually, mostly admiring her several beautiful cats.

Apple on Wednesday launched a new in-app subscription service on its App Store for the iPhone and iPad, alongside a new daily newspaper for the iPad from News Corporation, dubbed The Daily.

A new "In-App Subscriptions" section was added to the iTunes Terms and Conditions to explain how in-app subscriptions auto-renew, how the auto-renewal can be managed and turned off, and stating to users that Apple may request permission to provide personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. The sharing of information can be declined, which will not affect the purchase.

The subscription feature plays a key part in the new tablet-only newspaper from News Corp., called The Daily. The publication was unveiled Wednesday in New York City by the company’s chief executive, Rupert Murdoch, who said the product aims to capture the "serendipity and surprise" that traditional newspapers offer, but in a digital format on the iPad.

Free Same Day Shipping

"New times demand new journalism," Murdoch said. The publication will cost 99 cents per week, and the first two weeks are free courtesy of Verizon. News Corp. spent $30 million to prepare the publication for Wednesday’s launch.

For now, the subscription feature is only available from The Daily, though Apple will make an announcement in the near future about recurring subscriptions for other content providers and application makers.

A live demo of The Daily was conducted, showing off features like 360-degree photographs, interactive content, high definition video, and traditional newspaper staples like horoscopes, weather and crossword puzzles.

Adding to the mounting evidence that Apple plans to add cameras to its next-generation iPad, the company’s digital photography team is hiring a software engineer to create applications for the iPad platform.

In a new job listing posted this week discovered by AppleInsider, Apple revealed that it is looking for someone to fill the position of "iOS Photography Software Engineer." The role, based at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., campus, will ideally be filled by a "dynamic software engineer with the drive and desire to deliver great photography applications for the Mac and iPad platforms."

The job listing notes that Apple’s digital photography team has delivered applications for the Mac platform in the past, including iPhoto and Aperture. The new position will be related to text rendering and editing, as well as HTML generation, for publishing and viewing photo-based content, presumably on the Web.

Apple seeks an employee with "strong skills with established and emerging web technologies," including HTML5 and CSS. Another "key requirement" for the role is a worker who has a passion for photography.

Live Coverage of Launch of 'The Daily' for iPadNews Corp. today is holding a media event to launch its tablet-focused news publication, The Daily, which will initially be made available for the iPad. The event is scheduled to kick off at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City at 11:00 AM Eastern Time, or just about 30 minutes from now.

The Daily is offering a live video stream of the introduction on its website, where it has also announced that the application will go live in the App Store at noon Eastern Time, following the event.

Watch at 11 a.m. Eastern Time today as News Corporation unveils The Daily, featuring special guest Eddy Cue, vice president of Internet Services from Apple. Check back later today for our full web site. The Daily will be available on the App Store starting at 12 p.m. EST.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, will be presenting at the event, presumably to discuss Apple’s behind-the-scenes work to develop support for recurring billing to users’ iTunes Store accounts. The Daily has been reported to be priced at $0.99 per week, which would be automatically billed directly to users’ iTunes Store accounts rather than using separate payment methods.

In addition to The Daily‘s video stream, we will be updating this article with coverage as the media event unfolds.

Event Updates

– Those present at the event note that the audience is relatively small, possibly due to weather issues in New York City.
Gizmodo has published purported details on The Daily, confirming many of the rumored details including pricing of $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

– Event underway. News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch on stage. Thanking Steve Jobs for changing industries and developing the iPad. Welcomes Eddy Cue…we’ll hear from him in a few minutes.
– "The iPad demands that we completely re-imagine our craft."
– There is a substantial market of people who do not read traditional newspapers but do consume media and expect it at their fingertips. We’re going to bring the magic of newspapers to The Daily, and we must make the business of news gathering and editing viable again.
– The opportunity is enormous, and in the tablet era, there is room for a fresh and new voice.
– We can offer The Daily for only 14 cents per day, bringing a polished news magazine to our readers. The Daily‘s success will be determined by its utility and originality, and we will work tirelessly toward those goals.
– Congratulations and thank you to our friends at Apple and those involved with putting this project together.
– Introducing The Daily‘s executive team (Jon Miller, Greg Clayman, Jesse Angelo) to show off the publication.

Flash-friendly Skyfire browser for iPad gets updatedAfter the initial iPhone, iPad and iPod touch version earned $1 million in its first weekend on the App Store back in November, the third-party iPad-specific web browser Skyfire for iPad (US$4.99) has been updated to Version 2.1.1 and is available for downloading now. Fixes in the update include auto-completing URLs, stronger privacy controls and several performance improvements.

Because Apple’s iOS devices do not support Flash, the Skyfire browser provides a workaround that transcodes Flash video into HTML5 and thus enables iDevice owners to access most Flash-based websites and videos.

While Skyfire for iPad version 2.1.1 requires, well, an iPad running iOS 3.2 or later, iPhone and iPod touch users can download their own version for $2.99 from the App Store as well.
