Engadget is updating its opinion on what hardware the next generation iPad may have. The iPad 2 should include a faster processor, the A5, and more RAM at 512MB. They are also claiming that due to some “engineering issues”, the SD card slot and Retina display will not be seen in the new iPad. This sentiment joins the latest chorus of rumors suggesting an iPad 2 with moderate updates.
Notably, that SD card slot and higher resolution display won’t make it into the new model (the latter we’d been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What’s the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren’t crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague “engineering issues” which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour.
Front and rear facing cameras are still expected to be seen. Engadget also thinks iOS 5 will be announced along side the iPad 2 on March 2 and may be released this summer with the new iPhone 5.
With a toned down iPad on the way, we can assume the rumors of another version of the iPad to be released later this year may be true after all. Apple may have not had the time due to changing design and production issues to release the best iPad 2 it could have. If that’s the case, one may also then assume the iPad 3 would be filled with even more features and functions than the iPad 2.
