Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions on iPad Sooner Than Later? As noted last week, Apple is looking to fix the problem of offering print media on its devices. Now they’re making a push to get a new digital “iNewsstand” up and running sooner rather than later, says a report from the Wall Street Journal. But the release of the new media subscription service may be on hold until the next generation iPad becomes available by the end of the 1st quarter in 2011. The standalone application would be similar to Apple’s iBook store.

Apple has been a successful middle man with it’s iTunes Store in offering music, movies, TV shows and books. Now they’re trying their best to offer a similar service with newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Apple has had some past problems in negotiating deals with some media content providers in terms of offering single issues or monthly plans for sale as opposed to full subscriptions.

At present, Apple typically doesn’t sell subscriptions, instead offering monthly iPad editions of Wired magazine for $3.99 each, or a daily edition of Gannett Co.’s USA Today free. Subscriptions, however, are a much more important business for U.S. publishers, representing seven of every 10 newspapers and magazines sold. Publishers also mine subscriber rolls for names, email addresses, credit-card numbers and other information to help them attract advertisers and target new offers to readers.

An analyst from Morgan Stanley noted today that overall netbook sales have decreased ever since the iPad was announced this past January. The decline in notebook sales has been evident for months and continues into September. Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley is using NPD research data that shows falling notebook sales from previous years.

The analyst also mentioned an earlier report from Best Buy CEO that the iPad has chomped its own notebook sales by 50%.

Apple Preparing to Launch Newspaper Subscription Plans for iPad?The San Jose Mercury News reports that Apple is preparing to roll out support for newspaper subscriptions on the iPad, opening the door for new revenue streams for publishers. The information apparently comes via Roger Fidler, head of digital publishing at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute, who works closely with many newspapers and has received the information from industry sources.

Apple is expected to announce soon a new subscription plan for newspapers, which hope tablets like the iPad will eventually provide a new source of profits as media companies struggle with declining print circulation and advertising revenue.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the report, Apple may be looking to take a 30% cut of subscription revenue and up to 40% of advertising revenue from the digital newspaper content. Apple and major newspaper publishers have also reportedly agreed on an "opt-in" option for subscribers that would allow user information to be passed along to the publishers for generating advertising commitments. Those two items of contention have been seen as the primary barriers to bringing newspaper and magazine subscriptions to the iPad.

Jeppesen offers iPad chart appJeppesen now offers an application, Jeppesen Mobile TC, that allows pilots to search and view terminal charts on the popular Apple iPad touch-screen tablet computer. It is available from the Apple iPad App Store.

Non-Jeppesen charting subscribers will be directed to JeppDirect website to purchase the electronic chart subscription.

Jeppesen research and design experts determined that the 9.7-inch, LED-backlit iPad screen is ideal to view, search, and update Jeppesen terminal charts. JeppView electronic navigation charting service subscription customers will have access to Jeppesen terminal charts through the iPad application at no additional charge.

“Our new iPad application is designed for a very specific purpose, namely for searching and viewing terminal charts. However, the cross-market appeal of this technology will lead to further development of Jeppesen services available for the iPad in the near future, as customers provide the specifics required to serve their mobile computing needs,” said Tim Huegel, director of portfolio management at Jeppesen Aviation.

Not intended for navigational use, the Jeppesen Mobile TC application provides pilots with another tool for advancing toward a paperless operating environment. Jeppesen will address iPad applications for other aviation markets in the near future. Additional Jeppesen data services for iPad in the airline market, including tailored electronic charting and crew planning solutions, are being evaluated.

Victorian doctors and nurses could be equipped with iPads while undertaking their hospital rounds in future, if a trial of wireless technology is successful.

From January next year, 500 graduate doctors, nurses and advanced practice nurses would be given iPads to use when treating patients in hospital, Health Minister Daniel Andrews said.

The iPads would connect to safe wireless networks within the hospitals, without interrupting sensitive electronic equipment.

Mr Andrews said with the burgeoning use of and reliance on technology and technological aids in health, it made sense that health services would be influenced by access to new technology.
