Laminar Research has released an iPad version of its acclaimed X-Plane application. X-Plane for iPad combines many of the features of the X-Plane series of iPhone apps into a single application; the iPad version includes all 9 regions and 13 aircraft from the existing iPhone applications with 12 more regions and 27 more aircraft listed as “Coming Soon.” Users can choose to fly a wide range of different aircraft types including a Cessna 172, Boeing 747, F-22, ASK21 glider, Blackhawk Helicopter or even a Space Shuttle.
The iPad is not a big smartphone nor a scaled down laptop. It’s not really like any tablet that’s come before it. And for this reason, it will delight users ready for something new, and confuse and upset people who expect it to be something old and familiar.
This morning the iPad app deluge began–at least in the hearts and inboxes of tech journalists everywhere. I, for one, received more than I care to mention, and while I won’t even attempt to begin listing them, I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention the new app from Marvel, because, well, I’m a giant comics nerd (man, it feels good to finally get that off my chest.
According to a press release sent out this morning, the new Marvel Comics iPad app features access to "over 500 of Marvel’s greatest comic books, from classic stories, to modern tales." The list of familiar costumed names includes Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Thor.
I started watching this video on YouTube and, within seconds, my son was almost magically drawn into my office, staring transfixed at the screen. "This is air hockey?" he asked. "Yes," I replied. "I want it," he said. "It looks fun." My enthusiasm is slightly more tempered, but I think that this is a brilliant choice for an iPad game.
I’m hoping that the game will properly use portrait mode for all uses, regardless of what the video looks like, and that there will be, both, two-player on one device, and the over-the-air Bluetooth support shown on the iTunes description page. For that matter, it would be great to be able to play against a fake opponent, although that is not listed as part of the product description.
According to Bryan Duke of Acceleroto, Air Hockey will sell for $0.99 on the iTunes Store. There’s a free "Gold" version as well.
Here’s some screenshots for another upcoming iPad app called Game Table. The app brings Checkers, Chess, and various card games onto Apple’s tablet with detailed graphics and an “intuitive” interface — the developers claim it’s like carrying full board games around with you, but without all the little pieces and doodads.
