Another Touchscreen Supplier Added to iPad 2 Production

In an attempt to meet continued demand for iPad 2, Apple has added another touchscreen manufacturer to its list of component suppliers. Chimei Innolux Corp. will be the third touchscreen producer to supply iPad 2 touchscreens for Apple. TPK Holding Corp. and Wintek Corp. are the other two.

This new partnership means Apple is solidifying the relationship with its overseas manufacturing partner Foxconn Technology Group as Chimei Innolux Corp. is an affiliate of Foxconn.

Chimei is providing screens as well as touch sensors for iPad 2 and expects to start shipping components next month, according to DigiTimes.

OtterBox iPad Cases Are Here!

This announcement of Apple’s latest partnership comes on the heels of news about Apple testing LED backlights from a new source, Everlight Electronics.

2011 is expected to be a huge success for iPad 2 with shipments possibly reaching up to 45 million. Evidence of that can already be seen as high demand for the new tablet has been non-stop since its launch on March 11. Retail chains selling iPad 2 continue to have trouble keeping it in stock. ATT.com will ship the device within 10-15 business days and Apple.com will ship it within 2-3 weeks if purchasing online.

Apple Seeking Additonal LED Backlight Manufacturer

With the popularity of iPad 2 on par with that of Cabbage Patch dolls from the 80’s, Apple is looking to add another LED backlight maker to its list of manufacturers used to produce parts for the new tablet. High demand has resulted in limited stock available for purchase at stores across the world, and also long waiting periods to have iPad 2 shipped to you if you buy it online.

Sample of LED backlight products from Everlight Electronics have been delivered to Apple and are currently being tested. Should Apple decide to use another iPad 2 component producer, it’s likely they will meet estimated shipping amounts of 45 million units in 2011.

Everlight Electronics is a relatively large company with 6,400 employees based in Taiwan and offers its LED backlights to other tablet makers.

iPad Touch Panel Makers Further Quash Any iPad 3 Launch Rumors for 2011

DigiTimes reported yesterday on some news from component makers for iPad. Touch panel manufacturers suggest an upgrade from iPad 2 to iPad 3 is unlikely for this year as the higher resolution technology for Apple’s tablet is “still at the initial planning stage.” But there is also mention of a different communication format possibly coming with the next iPad version.

As for the iPad 3 rumor, the sources from upstream component makers pointed out that the new rumored device should be an upgrade version of iPad 2 or an iPad 2 version that supports different communication format. Since Apple just released its iPad 2 in early March and is ready to start mass shipping, launching the iPad 3 would simply bite off share from its iPad 2.

DigiTimes also notes its sources have not received any direction regarding iPad 3 components and that with iPad 2’s strong demand, iPad 3 won’t be available anytime soon.

It’s becoming more apparent that iPad 3 will launch around the yearly release schedule of the first-generation and iPad 2 launches, within the 1st quarter of 2012. iPad 1 was launched in the US on April 3, 2010, iPad 2 was launched on March 11, 2011.

Fixes for Verizon iPad 2 3G Issues and FaceTime Freezing Coming in iOS 4.3.2 Update
Can you connect to 3G now?

Last week, some people reported experiencing connectivity issues with their iPad 2 3Gs using the Verizon network. In the grand scheme of things, the number of users having this type of problem is very small. But it was big enough for an Apple spokesperson to address it.

All Things Digital received a message from Apple stating, “We are aware that a small number of iPad 2 customers have experienced connectivity issues with the Verizon 3G network and we are investigating it.”

A few weeks ago we reported about an issue some people were having with FaceTime on their iPad 2. The video conferencing feature would sometimes freeze up on the user. Some remedied the problem by simply restarting the iPad, or by performing a complete restore of iOS.

iOS 4.3.2 will fix Verizon Connectivity and FaceTime Issues

BGR sees solutions for both problems, and an issue with WebKit, coming in the next iOS update. iOS 4.3.2 should be available “in the next week or so.”

Future iPad Models May Include Buttons and Indicators on Bezel

It can be a little annoying when you’re playing a game while using your fingers or thumbs to control the action and movement. Your digits can also get in the way of watching a video or movie when using the player controls or when scrolling through a screen.

Apple has recently applied for a new patent which shows adding visual indicators and touch-sensitive buttons to the iPad’s bezel for an added “secondary display”. The new patent features are also included in future iPhone versions(shown in image above). Adding these touch-sensitive areas would enhance the user experience and help users navigate through apps and anything else viewable on the iPad.

The patent application is called “Electronic Devices with a Primary Display and a Selectively Illuminated Secondary Display” and notes the current method of displaying a virtual button within the viewable screen showing where to press for further action occupies space that can be used more for content and less for buttons.

iPad 2 Handles HTML5 Better than Xoom and Galaxy Tab

In a test between browsers in iPad 2, Motorola’s Xoom, and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, a web development tools vendor named Sencha called Apple’s iOS Safari “a top rate, no compromises HTML5 browser”. It characterized the Android operating system running on Xoom as “not ready for primetime, even for HTML4.”

All of the browsers are based on WebKit, but they are not all equal when it comes to web standards. WebKit’s engine provides some functions, but each browser also defines some of its own parameters like caching, screen drawing, location services, and memory management.

Sencha notes:

“our experience to date with Android has been lackluster, starting with the disappointing browser in the Galaxy Tab and the Xoom [running Android 3.0 Honeycomb].”

Android and iOS browsers had perfect scores in the Acid3 test, with some rendering issues being the only problem for both.

Another report was also done using Modernizr, which shows the browser features each operating system can support.

Sencha noted:

“…nearly all the major browser features are supported on the iPad 2. Modernizr found support for SVG, CSS 2D transforms, CSS 3D transforms, CSS transitions, WebGL and Web Sockets. Interestingly enough, Modernizer reported that there was no Inline SVG although we were able to try a few demo sites and saw that it did in fact work, and it also reported that the browser supports WebGL, which we couldn’t get to work. As we found in our earlier scorecards, just because a browser says something is there, it doesn’t mean it works. All the other HTML5 features except the ones mentioned worked beautifully.”

Performance testing also showed iPad 2 had a leg up on other popular tablets.
