Murdoch Previewing iPad-Exclusive Newspaper, The Daily, Tonight The world will finally see what the hype is around News Corp.’s iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, when it’s unveiled Wednesday morning at a press event at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. But a select will get a preview tonight at an intimate cocktail party at CEO Rupert Murdoch’s apartment.

Everyone else will have to wait until tomorrow to see the product that Apple and News Corp are said to have developed together. But there’s a lot of buzz floating around the Web about what the publication will actually look like.

The Daily is a new frontier for News Corp. The media empire historically purchases a publication and goes in and restructures, as it did with The Wall Street Journal. By contrast, Murdoch starts from scratch with The Daily. He’s nabbed respected journalists from publications like Forbes and the New Yorker to create original content spanning a broad base of topics including news, arts, sports, entertainment, and opinion.

For all the talk that The Daily is cutting edge, it walks a thin line between something that is both modern and old-fashioned, All Things D’s Peter Kafka said. News Corp. owns All Things D, but Kafka said he hasn’t gotten an invitation to Murdoch’s preview and doesn’t expect to receive one.

The Daily will have a lot of the bells and whistles that are now generally associated with publications on the iPad, such as audio and video. It’s also been reported that it would include 3D video, but Kafka said it’s not there yet.

Although The Daily has a Web site, the focus is most definitely on the app. The site will have just a small sampling of content included in the app, but probably less than 10 percent.

Theoretically, The Daily will probably feel pretty similar to a traditional newspaper. It will have six sections of original content delivered once daily. It will even have a crossword. With the iPad-friendly features that a lot of users have come to expect, there isn’t much that would separate The Daily from consumer magazines on the iPad, except that it’s delivered each day rather than each month.

'The Daily' iPad News Publication to Debut January 19th

Last month, All Things Digital reported that News Corp.’s forthcoming tablet-focused news publication, The Daily, appeared likely to debut sometime the week of January 17th. Forbes has now confirmed with a source inside the company that the publication will be formally announced on January 19th.

Mark your calendars, media nerds. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 is the day it all changes. Maybe.

That’s the planned launch date for The Daily, the iPad-only publication News Corp. has been feverishly developing. The company has yet to say boo about it, and a spokesman declined to comment when I asked him about the launch date, which comes via a News Corp. insider.

New Yorker Comes to iPadAnother magazine has come the the Apple iPad. The New Yorker has been an iconic publication for almost 80 years and now a digital version is available for download in the App Store at $4.99 per issue, though the app itself is free. The new online presence for The New Yorker is another effort from publisher Condé Nast to provide its magazine content to tablet users.

From The Wall Street Journal:

“It is important to the New Yorker that we have offerings that allow long-term relationships with the consumers,” said Condé Nast President Bob Sauerberg. “Obviously, we don’t have that in place for the moment with Apple. We are very keen to do that.”

The app gives users an animated cover created by artist David Hockney using the Brushes app for iPad, slideshows, and more content like extra cartoons and a video guide to reading the issue narrated by actor Jason Schwartzman.

Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions on iPad Sooner Than Later? As noted last week, Apple is looking to fix the problem of offering print media on its devices. Now they’re making a push to get a new digital “iNewsstand” up and running sooner rather than later, says a report from the Wall Street Journal. But the release of the new media subscription service may be on hold until the next generation iPad becomes available by the end of the 1st quarter in 2011. The standalone application would be similar to Apple’s iBook store.

Apple has been a successful middle man with it’s iTunes Store in offering music, movies, TV shows and books. Now they’re trying their best to offer a similar service with newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Apple has had some past problems in negotiating deals with some media content providers in terms of offering single issues or monthly plans for sale as opposed to full subscriptions.

At present, Apple typically doesn’t sell subscriptions, instead offering monthly iPad editions of Wired magazine for $3.99 each, or a daily edition of Gannett Co.’s USA Today free. Subscriptions, however, are a much more important business for U.S. publishers, representing seven of every 10 newspapers and magazines sold. Publishers also mine subscriber rolls for names, email addresses, credit-card numbers and other information to help them attract advertisers and target new offers to readers.

Apple Planning Newspaper Subscription Plan For iPadWithin as little as a few months Apple may begin to provide newspaper subscriptions on the iPad through a new digital newsstand service similar to the iBookstore, according to MacRumors.com. Bloomberg is also offering some insight into this highly anticipated subscription service that may turn a corner for magazines and newspapers hoping for a digital revival of their industry:

Apple Inc. is developing a digital newsstand for publishers that would let them sell magazines and newspapers to consumers for use on Apple devices, said two people familiar with the matter.

The newsstand, designed particularly for the iPad, would be similar to Apple’s iBook store for electronic books, said the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are private. The newsstand would be separate from Apple’s App Store, where people can buy some publications now, they said.

The parties involved are still haggling over the particulars such as pricing and revenue sharing, so it’s not a done deal just yet. But Apple is also offering developing tools to support news content and server technology to help newspapers get ready for the new “iNewsstand”.
