IFA 2010: External hard drive ends storage problems for Apple tablet
The company behind the popular external battery packs for the MacBooks, HyperMac, has launched a new external gadget for the iPad.
But rather than just a battery, or a keyboard, the HyperDrive is an iPad hard drive offering your Apple tablet a further 750GB of storage on the go and way beyond the top of the range 64GB model currently available.
The external drive, which comes with it’s own 3.2-inch colour display, d-pad and menu buttons takes a standard hard drive and then lets you transfer videos and image files to the iPad with the help of the official Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit and the iPad’s photo importer app.
What do you think about this little iPad stand, called the PadFoot? The tiny slug of plastic has a single slot that holds the tablet by just one corner, or it can be slid underneath to angle the touch-screen up for typing. It is surely a very minimal design, but it looks like it may also offer minimal support.
You need a fairly hefty chunk of plastic to keep the iPad stable when upright, as I found when testing the MoviePeg for the iPad. The MoviePeg consists of two similarly-functioning wedges, and despite being bigger and doubling up on pieces, it had a hard time with anything but a shallow angle in landscape-orientation. I have some trouble believing that the PadFoot could do any of what it seems to be managing in the photos, unless it has a very tight fit.
Another fun toy has been developed for the iPad and iPhone. The AR.Drone is a helicopter with 4 blades(quadricopter) and 2 video cameras that can be controlled by an amazing video and graphic interface on the iPad. Using your thumbs, fingers, or tilting your mobile device, you can control the AR.Drone’s ascent, descent, and rotation. The product, developed by Parrot, sells for $299 and can be ordered on brookstone.com now.
