Foxconn Plant Explosion May Slow Down iPad 2 Production

Researchers at iSuppli.com think iPad 2 production loss at the Foxconn plant that experienced a devastating explosion last week could reach as much as 500,000 units. Three workers were killed and more than a dozen wounded in the accident that may have been caused by a buildup of combustible dust in the plant’s ventilation system.

Foxconn has temporarily shut down polishing workshops at all of its plants to ensure there are no similar problems at other facilities. But they are also asserting that they have enough supplies currently to carry it through the brief shutdown period and the incident should have little effect on the company’s ability to meet iPad 2 production needs.

Explosion at iPad 2 Manufacturer Plant Won't Affect Production

3 people were killed and as many as 15 injured last week at an explosion at a new Foxconn plant in Chengdu, China. Foxconn manufactures the iPad 2 and iPhone for Apple. Some had suspected there might be delays in producing new iPad 2s and possibly even with the next version of the iPhone, but reports are now suggesting there will be no delays.

From China Times:

Sources said the explosion at Foxconn Technology Groups Chengdu plant did not affect the assembly line of iPad. Foxconn assured major suppliers at an online meeting yesterday that under the principle of orders placed and goods delivered as usual, the production of iPad 2 would not be delayed and related iPhone devices and new iPad products would still be in mass production in the third quarter.

UBS Investment Research analyst Maynard Um reported in a note to investors that this particular Foxconn plant is considered a secondary location for iPad 2 production. Less than 20 percent of all iPads produced come from the Chengdu plant.

Um noted:

Although the issue is unlikely to help supply issues to meet strong global demand, we see this issue as temporary and note there are few companies in our coverage that have as strong an end demand picture.

Sales Staff to Use iPads at Apple Retail Stores

It appears Apple is preparing to train employees at its retail stores to use the iPad as part of their job and interaction with customers. Stockpiles of new iPad 2’s have been arriving at some Apple stores and staff may start training as early as this weekend.

This new policy for on-the-job use of iPads may also replace the current iPod touch-based EasyPay terminal that customers can use for checkout. The size of the iPad could better display data, product features and make transactions easier to complete.

Apple also seems poised to release an iPad version of its RetailMe program which gives information about products and training videos for retail employees.

The iPad has become a useful tool for some businesses, streamlining daily tasks and more providing more customer interaction. Apple seems to be putting its very own golden boy to good use at home.

AppleInsider recently reported:

Changes at Apple’s retail stores set to begin this weekend will be “procedural” in nature, suggesting they will be related to the way the shops run or operate, rather than new products customers could buy. This would align with the distribution of iPads and new RetailMe software to Apple specialists.

The iPad comes in the different memory storage capacities, 16GB, 32,GB and 64GB. Using an external drive with an iPad is not a new idea, but using it wirelessly is a nice feature plenty of people will enjoy and take advantage of. Users can manage file transfers to and from the GoFlex Satellite by going to the settings section on their iPad to make sure a notice for the GoFlex personal Wi-Fi network is present.

There is a USB connection cord which allows the user to connect the hard drive to a Mac or PC. Files can be transferred from the computer to the external drive and then uploaded to the iPad through a wireless signal. The drive acts as a wireless hotspot, but only serves files and not the Internet.

You can enjoy watching movies wirelessly for up to 5 hours thanks to its battery and stream to 3 separate devices through the drive. Use the drive with other devices like iPhone and iPod, too.

Pre-order the GoFlex Satellite now through amazon.com or bestbuy.com. The external drive is expected to be released in July.

Purchase New Yorker Subscription Inside iPad App

Publisher Conde Nast has worked out a deal with Apple to sell subscriptions for The New Yorker within its app.

An updated version of that magazine’s iPad app gives lets users subscribe to the weekly magazine for $5.99 a month, or the equivalent of a $1.50 an issue. That’s a steep discount from the app’s old model, which only sold individual issues for $4.99 a pop.

Conde Nast is selling an annual subscription to the iPad app for $59.99; a yearly subscription to the print version of the magazine costs $69.95. Very important: Conde says print subscribers will get iPad access for free.

Several other Conde Nast magazines should have their own apps soon, providing in-app subscription purchases. These will include Wired, Golf Digest, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Self, Allure and GQ. Magazines offered on a monthly basis will cost $19.99 for an annual subscription rate and $1.99 per-issue.

iPad 2 Now Shipping in 1 to 2 Weeks From Apple.com

There’s been another update with iPad 2 shipments. If you order an iPad 2 online from apple.com, it will now ship to you within 1 to 2 weeks. Other countries like Mexico, Canada and Australia also share the same time frame for shipment as in the US.

As we’ve noted in previous articles over the past few weeks, the availability of the iPad 2 has been up and down with waiting periods for shipment being as much as 5 weeks just after the new tablet went on sale in March.

A few weeks ago the waiting time was at 3-4 weeks, and then soon after it dropped to 2-3 weeks. Apple appears to be producing more iPad 2s to supply the masses with the “tech crack” they so desperately desire.

Apple needs all the help it can get from various sources of iPad 2 components while the tablet is still selling like hot cakes. They just recently announced a partnership with Chimei Innolux Corp. which will be their third iPad touchscreen supplier. Everlight Electronics manufactures backlight components, which Apple is currently testing, and may become part of the list of suppliers for iPad 2 parts.

Toys R’ Us started selling iPad 2 last week as an addition to the several other retail outlets supplying new iPads to consumers.

AT&T updated its own shipping waiting period last week for iPad 2 orders made online to 10-15 business days. Supply is starting to meet demand, and more and more people are happy about that fact.

You can always use our “Buy iPad 2” resource page for information on retail store sales, links to purchase iPad 2 online and check real-time inventory for a few stores.
