Apple Retail Stores Run Dry of iPad Wi-Fi + 3G ModelsAppleInsider yesterday reported that Apple’s retail stores in the U.S. are running short of iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models, less than one week since the models launched. The report noted that all ten stores contacted had no 3G models on hand and were directing customers to Apple’s "Notify Me" waiting list service. Many of the stores had also run out of Wi-Fi-only iPad models.

Bloomberg follows up up on the story today, reaching out to at least nineteen stores around the country to find a complete lack of availability of 3G models.

Apple announces iPad will launch in 9 more countries on May 28

The iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. on Friday, May 28, Apple has announced.

Preorders for all iPad models, including both 3G and Wi-Fi, will begin next Monday, May 10. The international launch was previously delayed due to strong demand for the iPad in the U.S. The international iPad launch was originally scheduled for late April.

Further launches in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore will occur in July. Apple said it will announce launch dates for nine additional countries at a later date.

Apple has already sold more than a million iPads in the U.S. over its first 28 days of availability, selling 300,000 on its first day alone. The Wi-Fi iPad launched on April 3, while the iPad 3G launched a week ago, on April 30.

Since the iPad 3G launched, Apple’s U.S. retail stores have been sold out, while availability of the Wi-Fi model has been limited. Stores have resorted to adding customers to a “Notify Me” waiting list, which will give them first priority when new shipments arrive.

The first iPad customers have downloaded more than 12 million apps from the App Store, as well as more than 1.5 million e-books from the new iBookstore. The device runs 200,000 applications available on the App Store, including more than 5,000 created specifically for the device’s 9.7-inch touchscreen display.

Apple's iPad launch helps April retail electronics sales grow 9.7%Though overall retail sales in April were a mixed bag, consumer purchases of electronics grew 9.7 percent year-over-year, thanks in large part to the successful debut of Apple’s iPad.

Released this week, the numbers from MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse show that electronics, along with luxury goods and appliances, saw an increase in overall retail sales in April when compared to the same span in 2009, according to The Associated Press.

The report specifically cited the launch of Apple’s iPad as one of the primary reasons for growth in retail electronics sales. The iPad had two separate launches in the month: one for the Wi-Fi only version on April 3, and another for the 3G-capable model last week, on April 30.

The SpendingPulse figures apply from April 4 through May 1, and the results are compared with totals from a year earlier. The MasterCard figures include include transactions in all forms, including cash.

Today is the big day for a lot of people. Three months after the initial announcement of the iPad and a few weeks after the WiFi only model went on sale, today is the day you can finally purchase the iPad 3G model. Though the price of this model is about $130 more than the WiFi version, there are no contracts required for 3G service. Users can easily switch between both 3G plans, $15 per month for up to 250MB of data, or $30 per month for unlimted data usage. Below are some related articles:

Apple Is Hiring iPad Camera EngineerIt’s a sure thing that the iPad will get a camera in its second generation. After all, there’s already an empty, iSight-shaped slot in the iPad’s frame, and it’s pretty much a sure thing that both the next iPhone and iPod Touch will have a camera. It would be absurd if the iPad didn’t get one soon as well.

Apple must be thinking the same thing. Over at their official site, Apple has posted an employment opportunity for a performance QA engineer to work on still and video capture in the iPad Media department.

iPad shortage forces Apple to delay international launch until May

Apple on Wednesday revealed that demand for the iPad is far higher than the company predicted, with more than a half-million U.S.-only sales in the first week. As a result, it has delayed the international launch of the iPad until the end of May.

"Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad," Apple said in a statement. "We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April."

The press release continued: "Faced with this surprisingly strong U.S. demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason — the iPad is a runaway success in the U.S. thus far."
