9/11 Memorial App Coming Exclusively to iPad

We all know that the iPad can be used for all sorts of fun and entertainment, but the best part about the device is that it can also be used as a tool for education as well as remembrance in some occasions. One of those remembrance situations comes in the form the of soon to be released 9/11 Memorial: Past, Present and Future app that is due to be released on September 1st.

The interactive app offer hundreds of different pictures, stories and even some videos that will document that dark day in America’s history. The best part about the 9/11 Memorial app is that it’s only going to be available on the iPad, so those of us who own the device will have access to something that other tablet owners will not. The app’s developer, Steve Rosenbaum recently told the New York Observer that he just felt that the iPad was the best platform for this particular app.

The nature of the photographs are so powerful, so to render them in anything but full color seemed wrong to me. And I didn’t want it to be viewed on a phone. I wanted it to be big and glossy.” Rosenbaum said.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

Steve Jobs, the man at the forefront of Apple since its inception resigned from his post as company CEO today. Tim Cook will take over as the new CEO, while Jobs will serve in a lesser role as Chairman of the Board.

In a letter to Apple’s Board of Director’s and the Apple community, Jobs writes:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Jobs has suffered from health problems since 2004 after being diagnosed and treated for pancreatic cancer. Since then he has taken a few more leave of absences, most notably in 2009 for a liver transplant, and most recently since January 2011.

Apple stock is currently down about 5% at $356 dollars per share.

Considering the biggest earthquake in recent memory was felt along most of the east coast of the United States today, we’d like to highlight some useful earthquake related apps. The 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Mineral, Virginia was felt as far north as Massachusetts, as far south as Georgia, and as far west as Chicago. Light damage was reported in some places close to the epicenter and some airline and cell service was interrupted. Maybe now is the time to get a useful earthquake reporting app for your iPad.

Earthquake for iPadEarthquake for iPad 2

Earthquake (Free and $1.99)
Appropriately named, Earthquake is a simple and useful app for the iPad that gives you updated information on recent earthquakes around the world. From Fiji, Turkey, Japan, to California, you can learn the location and strength of just about every noticeable earthquake on the planet. This app uses real-time information from various sources including USGS, EMSC, GeoNet, Natural Resources Canada, British Geological Survey, and GeoScience Australia. Google map integration lets you see exactly where that last “big one” struck. There’s a paid version and a free one(Earthquake Lite – isn’t that an oxymoron of sorts?). The free version gives you basic information which should be useful to just about everybody. The paid version goes more in-depth with sorting and filtering capabilities, along with more information and social media links.

QuakeWatch for iPad

QuakeWatch ($0.99)
One of the more popular earthquake reporting apps, this one is full of features. Along with the usual information, QuakeWatch highlights any earthquake with a magnitude of 1.0 or greater from anywhere in the world. It uses updated information from 7 different sources including the US Geological Survey and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. Use the filter to only see larger earthquakes or sort by the 100 most recent earthquakes, largest earthquakes over the past week, closest earthquakes to your location, or nearest to a place anywhere on the earth that you specify. If you’re looking for the best iPad earthquake reporting app for a great price, this is probably it.

United Airlines Pilots Exchange Flights Bags for iPads

United and Continental Airline pilots will be lugging less weight into cockpits as their flight bags will soon be replaced with Apple iPads. United Airlines made the announcement today that shows how trustworthy and useful the iPad is becoming in the business world.

Pilots routinely carry flight bags filled with manuals, booklets and other items used during flight. UA’s new policy will help save fuel in the long run since bulky bags will soon be a thing of the past, being replaced by the relatively light iPad. Time and energy will be saved by not having to thumb through pages and pages of flight manuals or other documents when the pilot can easy make a few finger swipes or taps to get the information they need.

Each iPad, which weighs less than 1.5 pounds, will replace approximately 38 pounds of paper operating manuals, navigation charts, reference handbooks, flight checklists, logbooks and weather information in a pilot’s flight bag. A conventional flight bag full of paper materials contains an average of 12,000 sheets of paper per pilot. The green benefits of moving to EFBs are two-fold–it significantly reduces paper use and printing, and, in turn, reduces fuel consumption. The airline projects EFBs will save nearly 16 million sheets of paper a year which is equivalent to more than 1,900 trees not cut down. Saving 326,000 gallons of jet fuel a year reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 3,208 metric tons.

The Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck iPad app will be at least one source pilots will use in the future to help streamline efficiency in the cockpit.

'The Lads from Liverpool' iPad App Puts Beatles Fans to the Test

The most comprehensive collection of Beatles facts and trivia you’ll find anywhere has just landed in the App Store. The Lads from Liverpool, which was immediately featured as a Noteworthy Music App by Apple, is a must have for any Beatles fan. This thoroughly researched game not only tests fans knowledge, but also it sure to teach even the most-die hard fab-four-fanatic a thing or three about the band. It is no surprise whatsoever that within a month of its launch, The Lads from Liverpool, developed by Tourbuddy Systems, was getting ink from such famed Beatles Journalists as Steve Marinucci and David Holmes. Discussions on Beatles message boards have been universally positive and the app currently boasts a 4.5/5 star average on iTunes.

This interactive quiz offers Beatles Buffs a treasure trove of hundreds and hundreds of questions about the band, their music, the members and their lives both on and off the stage. Questions are served up randomly with each new round, so users can play over and over, and range in difficulty with bonuses and double bonuses being awarded for the most difficult questions. Fans can see how their Beatles knowledge stacks up against their friends and of course brag about their score on Facebook or Twitter, without leaving the app.
