Opera to roll out iPad browser(Reuters) – The largest mobile Internet browser firm Opera Software ASA confirmed its entrance to the fast-growing tablet computer space and said it has reached a landmark 100 million cellphone users.

Opera, which has browsers for personal computers and mobile phones, said in a statement on Thursday the new version of Opera Mini for Apple’s iPad would ‘appear’ at the Mobile World Congress trade show next week in Barcelona.

Research firm Gartner has said it expects the market for tablet computers, created by Apple’s iPad, to rise to 55 million devices next year from 19.5 million this year.

The mobile Internet market has boomed since the introduction of Apple’s iPhone in 2007.

Opera has increased its lead over rival browsers — from Blackberry maker RIM, Nokia, Google’s Android and Apple itself — this year and controlled 21 percent of the market in February so far, according to Web analytics firm StatCounter.

Hands-on with the BBC's iPlayer for iPadAs we reported yesterday the BBC’s new iPlayer for iPad appeared in iTunes overnight for UK residents and we’ve got a hands-on look at the app for you. For those who didn’t know, iPlayer is a little like Hulu for BBC content; it aggregates almost everything the BBC showed in the last week across it’s various TV channels and radio stations into an attractive web interface for catch-up viewing. It’s free to UK users because of the unique way the BBC is funded (and not currently available outside the UK), so it’s a very popular service. It’s also quite widely supported on various devices — the BBC’s developers have worked with manufacturers to bring it to Sony’s PS3, Nintendo’s Wii, the Boxee Box, amongst others.

Up until now, the iPad has been a rather poor relation in the iPlayer universe, despite the naming similarities. Users have had to make do with a rather sub-par web interface to access iPlayer content. The UI was sluggish, small, fiddly and generally unpleasant. This new native app solves all those problems, and adds some nifty new features to boot.

Compared to that web version, this new iPlayer app is much improved. The main part of the interface is a chunky tile-based layout of popular shows, with attractive high-quality photography (even for radio programmes). New to the app is the ability to browse a listings grid of the BBC’s TV and radio channels, and use this both to view catch-up shows and the live content of all the channels. This is particularly handy for sporting events; previously, you’d have to wait until the game finished before it would appear in the iPlayer’s catchup listing.

orld of Goo for Apple iPad outsells than Mac, PC, Linux, Wii, Xbox versions

The iPad 2 is (presumably) still months away, and already tech blogs are buzzing about the iPad 3.

According to TechCrunch and Daring Fireball, Apple may be planning to unveil the iPad 3 later this fall. If the rumors are true, the appearance of this next-next-generation tablet would be a surprise, especially as it would come so shortly after the iPad 2, and as Apple usually sticks rigidly to its product development cycles. Given that the original iPad went on sale in April, Apple would be expected to release the second version of the tablet around the same time a year later.

TechCrunch writes,

We’ve now heard that this "fall surprise" is related to this would-be iPad 3. We don’t have any more concrete information beyond that. But, as of right now, the plan is apparently to release one iteration of the iPad in the next few weeks. And then blow the doors open with another new version in the fall.

[…] But Apple has a history of not resting on their laurels. That’s perhaps the key reason why they’ve been so successful in recent years. And that’s exactly why they strike with the iPad 3 in the fall.

Now, I have no details as to what this iPad 3 would include. But one very solid guess is a retina-like display that the iPhone 4 currently has. There’s obviously been many rumors of this for the iPad 2, but it’s not happening yet. But perhaps it could this fall. Another, slightly smaller form factor will clearly be another guess. Steve Jobs has famously played down that idea in the past — but he often does that and turns around with an offering.

orld of Goo for Apple iPad outsells than Mac, PC, Linux, Wii, Xbox versions

Developer 2D Boy makes the popular World of Goo game, which they recently released on the iPad, and the official blog has a long writeup about the iPad version from creation to release. 2D Boy originally planned to release the game on the iPhone, but couldn’t get it to work right, so when the iPad came around, they decided to tackle the port again. The writeup outlines not only development of the game, but also marketing (after an early choice to release at $10, they eventually lowered the price to pick up some sales boosts) and even the timing of their release — they landed right in that "loophole" around Christmas that allowed them to pick up some extra sales by being on the charts during the App Store freeze.

And perhaps most interesting is 2D Boy’s comparison of the iPad market to their past console and PC experience. The iPad version was the fastest-selling of all of the versions of the game so far, both in copies sold and revenue generated. That’s pretty wild and it shows that not only does iOS offer a lot to developers in terms of when and how they can release their games, but that Apple’s platforms stack up favorably to more established marketplaces like WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade.

It looks like the AC/DC luving crew over at iPadDevice figured out how to take the leaked iPad 2 FaceTime files from the iOS 4.3 beta SDK and install them onto a first generation iPad. Because the files are from the SDK, we may be looking at the new iPad’s actual FaceTime application. The interface is very similar to the one found on FaceTime for Mac.

As we previously noted, the new iPad will feature an updated FaceTime logo, that is different than the one currently found on iOS 4.2-rocking iPod touches. When a FaceTime call comes in, your iPad 2 will ring and you will get a popup alert on your lock screen, or on top of the application you are currently working on.

Back to the actual interface, the FaceTime controls (end, mute, etc.) will be found on a floating window towards to bottom of the device’s display. The current iPad 2 does not have a camera and that is the reason for the lack of a camera preview on the lock screen when a FaceTime video call comes in, and when the user is actually FaceTime chatting. You will notice the above video is in Italian, but the concept is relatively the same.
