Apple Files Patent Application for Multiple Position iPad Stand

This is one of those ideas we see fun through the patent office from Apple that looks as if we will probably never see it happen. It’s not that it’s a bad idea, but Apple has a tendency to keep all their designs as free of extra pieces and bits as possible. That said, it’s doubtful we will see a feature like this on the iPad 2. That doesn’t mean it’s not interesting to see some of the ideas cooked up by tech companies.

Still, an iPad with a kickstand similar to what is on the back of the EVO sounds rather interesting. Especially when that kickstand can be moved to any position and locked. That’s what this application seems to be for, according to the abstract and the drawings.

Here's Why Apple's iPad Will Dominate The Tablet Market For YearsApple’s iPad is a huge consumer hit, with almost 15 million purchased in its first 9 months of sales.

And after analyzing the market, we believe Apple is likely to dominate the tablet industry for years to come.

While competition will intensify, the iPad will continue to be the best all-around product for consumers, and therefore Apple should maintain very high market share (50%-60%) for at least several years.

Click here to flip through the tablet players one-by-one to see how we think they’ll do.

In the long-term, we don’t think the tablet market will be as lopsided as the MP3 or PC markets, where a lone platform (iPod, Windows) annihilates everyone else. But we also don’t think it will be as evenly distributed as the smartphone market, where no single platform has more than about one third of the market.

But, you may say, Google Android just kicked Apple’s butt in smartphones! Why won’t this happen in tablets?

The fundamental difference between the tablet market and the smartphone market is distribution.

Whereas smartphone distribution is dominated by wireless carriers, we expect carriers to play a relatively small role in tablet distribution. Tablet sales will be centered around electronics retail — the Apple store, Best Buy, Walmart — and big e-commerce, and not around carrier stores.

In mid-January, we asked Business Insider readers, "If you were going to buy a tablet, where would you buy it from?" Only 6% said they would buy from a carrier retail store or website. Meanwhile, 51% said they would buy it from an Apple retail store or Apple.com — where they only sell iPads. Another 24% said they would buy from Best Buy, Walmart, other retail, or associated e-commerce.

(That is, in part, because we believe that most people will not want to sign 2-year wireless data contracts for tablets, and therefore won’t care as much about carrier-subsidized pricing. So while carriers have taken it upon themselves to start supporting tablets like crazy, we don’t think they will ultimately do much of the tablet selling.)

So let’s walk through the typical tablet-buying routine.

iPad 2: First preview next week as a 'One more thing' during an iOS 4.3 developer event? Will the iPad 2 be presented next week? Our sources from the accessories business told us Apple is planning an event next week where they’re going to showcase the iPad 2 as well.

A release date between 2nd and 9th April seems quite likely, sources – not only ours – pointed to a release in early April. The only question is: When will the iPad 2 be presented? One manufacturer of iPad accessoires now told us Apple is planning on holding an event next week.

They weren’t sure about the circumstances, but were already able to tell us more about their knowledge of the features: The iPad 2 is going to be based on the Apple A5 processor, a completely new processor that is going to to replace the Apple A4 soon. The form factor of the case will change, to a more iPod touch 4G-ish look, comparable to the first mockups we’ve seen already.

A report examining iOS 4.3 beta firmware concurs that the next iPad will be offered in three models (WiFi, 3G GSM/UMTS and 3G CDMA), but adds mention of a 3MP camera capable of 720p video recording, DisplayPort video output, and what appears to be a hardware battery gas gauge.

The report, by web developer Chris Galzerano, describes mention of three new iPad models designated as iPad2,1 iPad2,2 and iPad2,3, as well as a placeholder "iFPGA" model (a designation Apple uses to reference prototypes using a field-programmable gate array, which is a chip with functions that can be reprogrammed).

The report also noted plist files referencing 720p, a magnetometer (digital compass), DisplayPort (the video output system Apple has standardized on across its Macs, which is also used to output HDMI signals), and mention of "gas-gauge battery and multitasking-gestures."

One case design suggested the presence of a top facing port that could be the size of Apple’s mini DisplayPort, potentially enabling iPad 2 to support HDMI video output in addition to the existing support for composite VGA.

iPad 2 Spotted at 'The Daily' News Event

Reuters reports that a prototype model of an unreleased iPad was spotted at today’s launch of The Daily.

Apple iTunes

A Reuters eyewitness saw what appeared to be a working model of the next iPad with a front-facing camera at the top edge of the glass screen at a press conference to mark the debut of News Corp’s Daily online paper in New York on Wednesday.

The new iPad was identified by the front-facing camera that is widely expected in the next version of the iPad. According to a separate Reuters source, the device’s existence was said to be “confirmed” though the final release model could have other features.
