Why ABC’s iPad App is Free, but ABC Shows on Hulu’s App-to-Be Won’t Be

One of the benefits of the upcoming Hulu subscription service: The ability for users to watch shows from NBC, Fox and ABC on the iPad. But iPad users can already watch shows ABC shows on the iPad, via the network’s free app. What gives?

That’s the question a lot of people in the media industry have asked since the Disney  (DIS) unit launched its app in April. The usual response, after a shrug — perhaps Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted to do something nice for Apple’s (AAPL) Steve Jobs, who happens to be the biggest single owner of Disney shares.

And that may well be the case. But I’ve since heard a slightly more detailed justification for the free app. Bear with me:

Sports Illustrated Scores iPad EditionSports Illustrated rode an early wave of tablet computer fever last fall, when the iPad was only a rumor. Now, the 56-year-old sports icon is rolling out its first iPad magazine issue.

Sports Illustrated’s iPad edition, released Thursday, has the same stories as the print issue, plus about 30% more content in the form of extra photos, an exclusive documentary video, a book excerpt and other bells and whistles. A story about the recent U.S. Open golf tournament includes a panoramic photo of a tricky part of the Pebble Beach golf course, along with pop-up graphics showing how five top golfers fared at those holes. While the beginning of each print edition typically has a handful of sports photos, the iPad edition adds a slideshow of a spectacular bicycle crash.

Each weekly issue costs $4.99, the same as the paper magazine. Many magazines have been selling their iPad editions at the same price as print, a trend that some people have criticized as misguided.

DC Comics–home to pop culture icons Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (and lesser-known characters like Jonah Hex and The Losers)–announced Wednesday that it would be distributing its comics digitally in a deal that resembles those of its competitors, but with some unique twists.

The publisher has partnered with ComiXology and the PlayStation Network to digitally distribute its comic books on Apple iOS devices and on all PlayStation Portable devices. ComiXology has now locked down distribution deals with more than 30 comics publishers, including the “big two” of Marvel Comics and DC, as well as Boom Studios, Image Comics, and Slave Labor Graphics.

The Democratic National Committee plans to port its message to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch beginning Thursday, offering two free new apps that connect voters with the party’s candidates and events.

The two tools, one of which is powered by Organizing for America, seek to build off the success that President Barack Obama had in 2008, when his campaign took its fight to Washington’s newest political battleground – the smartphone. The party chose June 24 as its release date to coincide with the scheduled debut of Apple’s hotly anticipated iPhone 4.

Democratic strategists on Wednesday described their new offering as a staple part of the DNC’s new, $50-million Vote 2010 campaign, designed to mobilize voters ahead of a tough midterm election cycle.

“Today’s launch is part of the DNC’s ongoing effort to communicate directly with voters, to be on the cutting edge of technology and to equip our supporters with the tools they need to help the president and to elect Democrats who support his agenda this fall,” said Brandi Hoffine, a spokeswoman for the DNC.

If you’re a weather freak, or simply like to get very accurate weather information when planning your activities, there is an app that can be quite helpful for you on the App Store. Its name is Seasonality Go, and it recently launched on the App Store.

Seasonality Go provides you with a wealth of weather data that you decide how you want to view it. The app showcases a very elegant design. You will have a collection of screens each composed of weather inserts that can be arranged to form unique views of the weather. Inserts can be added, resized, and moved around on each screen, so you can see exactly what you want.

The app offers you several inserts such as 7 day forecasts, radar/satellite imagery, astronomical data, and graphs showing variables like temperature, precipitation, and cloud cover to name a few.

The app also comes bundled with over 30,000 built-in locations in over 200 countries worldwide. If you happen to be out in the middle of nowhere with no built-in locations nearby, Seasonality Go will use your iPad 3G GPS capability to pick up your location and will show you weather from the closest weather station.
